Another example of me being a bad influence... This is a friend's car that was scooped up for $325. LT1 with a blown head gasket but only 109k, all power options, air ride, and posi. Car will be getting bolt-ons, gears, and eventually a cam. We've aleady stripped out the emissions crap and AC to save some weight but there is plenty more to go. This will be the fastest car he's ever owned and one of the cheapest up front. A sports car is too expensive and impractical for him so this budget build should get the job done. The local Mustangs won't be pleased.

So, we got the new heads cleaned up, oiled the guides a little (they've been sitting for a long time), and now they're ready to install. Also dumped some new oil down the lifter valley after removing the milkshake that was in there and primed the motor... some nasty stuff started seeping out of the lifters but the motor turns fine. We have to do some more scraping on the bores to get the rust out and then it will be time to slap it together. This shortblock doesn't owe us anything so it's worth a shot. If it turns out to be a dud then I know where to source another one on the cheap.

It's mostly together. This isn't the most recent pic, it got dark but we kept working. It only needs the exhaust manifolds, alternator, valve covers, throttle body, and maf installed along with coolant. We were being cheap and decided to reuse the stock exhaust bolts only for a few weeks before getting headers. Unfortunately, one of the stock bolts sheared off in the head so we need an ez out. It's getting ARPs early.

Will revisit this later, gotta gey the Camaro ready for OC.

Land yachts! I think the Roadie sedan is the ugly duckling of the bunch but that just makes it cheaper to pick up. I dig the Caprice bc they look so similar to the Impy SS but people want them for donk reasons. It needed to be LT powered and in the junker price bracket lol.

It lives! The yacht is mobile for a grand total of around $650-700 (including car). Oil pressure gauge was temporarily alligator clipped and taped to the windshield. Motor seems healthy so it needs some mods now.

Huge thanks to popo8 for the 4.10 gears. This should really wake the car up compared to the stock 2.56 ratio. 1st gear tops out at 60 right now... ew. Exhaust will probably be Summit long tubes, 2.5" universal X pipe, mufflers, and dumps before axle. Might source stock Impala SS coils because the ride is so floaty it'll make you seasick. Air ride will be deleted eventually and more weight has to come out. Sleeper #2 in the making.

TG HD2 kit, full race

Knock out your teeth shifts and it may survive a little.

Catmaigne
05-26-2016, 11:07 AM
Would the HD2 kit be a bad idea on a trans with 110k? Seems to be in good health and was previously owned by the elderly. I understand it decreases the clutch slippage between gears but I'm wondering how hard it'll be on everything else.

I know I can tune in firmer shifts. Would that and a cooler extend the life of the trans?

You fix shift issues mechanically not via tune. That is what I have always read and my tuner agrees.

A cooler would def help, but that won't help if its slipping when at operating temp already. In the end of the day, you are playing with fire, might as well make it a fast burn.

Catmaigne
05-26-2016, 02:03 PM
I don't think there's anything wrong with it mechanically, drives fine. No slip that I noticed. I was just under the impression that the stock shifts were meant to be slow and smooth which would mean more wear on the clutches.

Do what u can with tune up until it won't shift any faster, then worry about valve body. Good tune u won't notice it as much until u make substantially more power. Cahall has his own valve body mods he does, talk to him, TRUST ME. Even a stock or light performance build from Frank is well worth it, and will shift lightning quick

I also have a moog/gm factory spring chart that will lower and tighten up ride alot and can be had off amazon for dirt cheap

We're gonna do what we can with the stock tranny until it goes from abuse. I don't think he's interested in building the auto so this may end up as another 6 speed swap.

How much are the springs? We found some used SS stock springs on CL we could probably get for $60-70. Might source FE4 coils at the yard if not.

And the deals are out there. We found this gem in the parts section of CL with little info and no pictures for $650. Got it for half.

Little update...
Haven't done the gears yet but will be soon. The only things that will be replaced are pinion bearings/seal, ring gear bolts, and shims when needed. We have to use a ring gear spacer because the current posi is a series 2 and gears are series 3. Car will get shorter gears after the noise drives him insane and/or possible T56 swap, probably 4.30 or 4.56. Then it'll get all new bearings/seals.

Scored another computer, 3.5" MAF, and P71 Crown Vic aluminum driveshaft at the junkyard yesterday for a grand total of $62. He will need to have the shaft shortened 3/4" or extended control arms to use it, but I think the control arms are a better choice bc stock are flimsy. Plus, car needs a rear sway bar and aftermarket lowers have mounts.

The stock Impy SS springs were sold so I'm searching for other options for him. I was thinking Moog 7268 or 80050 for fronts (both firmer than stock, around same height) and stock SS or cut down 9C1s on the back. The current FE1 setup is a mess.

We should be grabbing an exhaust system, cam, EWP, and some other stuff later in the week. I'll post pics then.

We found the junkyard motherlode today. Went back to get the 2.5" exhaust with blowmasters and I realized that the 4.3 Caprice had discs on the back... Something was weird. I could tell there were 3.73 gears in the diff by turning it and when we popped the cover off there was an Eaton posi inside. We also took the rear springs which I'm pretty certain are stock SS.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160616/0be01a75f08fe1c8bdc90be393bd1563.jpg

Comp Cams 218/230 .528/.544" 114 lsa, used but only for dyno time. I bought this cam years ago from Jason Short when planning the 355 for my Camaro... That was before the build got out of hand and I sold it in favor of a billet LE cam.

Also, spare 110k shortblock from a TA. I remember the oil pressure being good.

I finished up the tune for the car with 3.73s and tomorrow the new diff should be going in. I tried firming up the shifts a little so hopefully nothing explodes. I am also trying to convince him to grab a S10 torque converter from the junkyard which will bring the stall speed up to 2025 from 1400. Not a huge difference but still a big improvement for $20. That and the transgo kit is probably the farthest he will go with the auto.

This diff should have the biggest improvement on the butt dyno. Car is basically stock other than AL heads, higher CR, ghetto CAI, and some weight stripped out. He is collecting a ton of parts to go on and hopefully we can get the car to Maple Grove by the end of the summer. Trying to get this piggy into the 13s for <$1k total invested.

So the diff is in and the car pulls much harder and shifts slightly firmer. The rear end breaks loose with a lot more ease now.

Tune needs some work though as the PCM is adding a good bit of fuel on both banks and pulling timing. The timing tables are based around the stock f-body bin but somewhat nerfed, maybe I need to reduce them more. The tiny b-body cam and higher SCR (11.1:1) means the DCR is higher than it should be but this setup is temporary as the comp cam will ultimately be going in. Also, there is a very faint noise coming from the engine that is either an exhaust leak or tap which could be responsible for the computer being wonky. The higher CR and lack of intake silencers aren't helping... maybe a f-body knock module would help? Wonder how sensitive it is in comparison (different #s of knock sensors).

Headers will be going in very soon so that's going to throw everything out of whack.

Headers and other exhaust parts have been ordered. He also ordered a X to spice into the 2.5" junkyard system because it has no crossover (like stock).

New junkyard shopping list:
15x8 Suburban steelies -- will need to measure backspace before buying
275/60r15 tires or similar sizes -- if not then he could splurge on new NT555Rs for $120ea
S10 torque converter -- rated at 2025 rpm vs 1400 stock
Better trans cooler -- probably coming from a bigger truck, heard fords decent plate coolers
Rear sway bar -- stock 9C1 or SS if we can find it, if not we will rig something cheaper

We already have the over-axle pipes. The junkyard system we pulled is a full catback but has no crossover. Not sure if it's aftermarket or custom, but he wanted a crossover to put a wideband bung into and figured it would be worth a tiny bit of power. The mennonites will be fabbing pipes to connect the Summit LTs to the catback and I doubt the X will cost a whole lot more to splice in.

Also, the 15x8 Suburban wheels won't fit under the RMS skirts because of the backspacing. Looks like he either needs to find a deal on Impy wheels or buy the 17x8 Cragar Soft 8s that used to be on Gma.

Heh... time for some BBQ paint. I have the coated versions on Gma and can honestly say they're not worth it. He will also be cutting the flanges off and making the exhaust slip fit so it'll have a better shot of sealing after bottoming out. I also think he'll have to exchange the X for one with angled inlets/outlets so it'll clear the driveshaft easier.

Catmaigne
07-12-2016, 11:57 PM
He bought the Cragars although one of them is bent from hitting a curb. 17x8 Soft 8s in gloss black, should look really nice on a gold car especially after lowering it. We went to the junkyard earlier today and found 235/55r17s on P71 Vics and a later Bonneville. 3 of 4 are Goodyear RS-As in good shape and the last is a Continental that's alright. No rot, not bad for $60.

Expect pics soon. We're also in search of drivers side fender/doors in gold to replace the ones that smacked a guard rail.

Waiting on a $8 rock auto set. After that's dealt with it'll be going to the exhaust shop to have everything else welded up. I think it'll be loud as hell with the Flowmaster 40s.

Also, I think there's something wonky going on with the trans/converter because the redline and MPH don't match up at all. I am going to review some datalogs to see if it's the converter going or slipping trans. I will post some vids in a little bit.

So the dyno operator took the car to redline both times.

Redline is 5522rpm
3.73 gears
27.18 diameter tires (235/55r17)
3rd gear pull in D3 setting (1:1 for 4l60e)
Peak power was at 97mph on the dyno printout and redline was 112mph

I calculated redline to actually be at about 120mph. The whole power curve looks normal but maybe a little too broad and shifted 8mph to the left. Could the trans be slipping? I know the 3-4 clutch is what goes earliest on these things (it's what went in Gma's 4l60e) so I wouldn't be surprised. I think he's set on the T56 now lol.

Also, we took the car out last night on some back roads and I can now say HOLY SHIT I didn't think a boat could handle like that. He needs a rear sway bar still and something thicker up front, but it handles very nicely.

Stock converter? That is good to know. We were gonna take it out on a datalog run to rule out any slip.

@SSlowBoat (http://ltxtech.com/forums/member.php?u=5592)

This car was a 96 but was converted to OBDI, tune is based on Grandma's stock tune (95 Roadie). I didn't think about this until now, but is there a chance that the PWM lockup nonsense is screwing with the trans and causing slip?

I have been looking at datalogs and was using the engine RPM and trans gear to calculate an expected MPH the car should be at past the 1400rpm stall speed at any given time. What I'm getting is really strange though because the actual MPH doesn't correspond to the calculated MPH a lot of the time. Either really bad trans slip or the converter isn't locking up as it should.

Forgive me if this all sounds really stupid, I am illiterate when it comes to autos.

edit: I did a bunch of reading and I think I misunderstood how the converter works. So 1400rpm would only be the maximum allowed rpm difference between the engine and trans input. Going to make a plot of % converter slip and compare it in each gear. Could be that the trans is good, motor might be having problems. Doesn't really matter though, the cam is going into the old TA shortblock and getting dropped in eventually. He is also eyeing up a junker Formy with a T56 to part out so the swap would be pretty cheap.

This came from a log where the car was rolling around 45 in D and went WOT. Disregard all of the blue dots above 5200rpm because it didn't shift, forgot to allow the car to shift 3->4 after taking off the top speed limiter. I left it at factory when the car was on the stock wheels with big truck tires.

The slip is %. Being that 2nd and 3rd are right in line with each other, I'd assume that 3rd isn't slipping. I guess stock converters are just really crappy. Converter is unlocked above 43.5% TPS.

I guess we have a problem elsewhere, still feel like it should've dynoed more.

Grampy made 262whp this time. Still down about 5 deg timing and it needs a wideband so I can do a real tune on it, but it's much better than last time.

Sad update. Gpa got rear ended by a Cobalt a while back and was totalled. Keith was alright, but the car was toast. The aftermarket stuff got salvaged and the rest scrapped. He's working on getting another LT car, preferably a stick fbody or Impala.38731
