So I've done a ton of thinking and research and a poor boy has to do what he has to...right. After a ton of thought I think I'm going to let Josh at TNT Fab build me an 8.8. There are several pro's to it for me and it should definitely meet my goals as the one in Josh's car has atleast gone 9.60's. The guy has great craftsmanship as well and I've read of a ton of satisfied people. Just curious if any of you are here? I'm going to start gathering parts this week I think.

What does he charge to fab an 8.8?

He lists it all on his FB, POPO. Roughly $600 for the conversion.

Wow... thats not bad. Is that with all parts included, or with the buyer supplying all the parts?

Popo, that's the labor. You send Josh the empty 8.8 center section with 3" of tube sticking out each side and you chop the 7.5 axle tubes off at the center section and send those as well. In my case I also wanted the LPW support cover and back brace package that works with the cover so I'll be sending that as well. Josh will narrow the rear if that's what you want and I do so that will cost me a little bit extra and Josh will fab the Hiltsy mount for the Torque Arm. Once he's done he'll ship the diff back and you reassemble. You have to order new axles but he'll help you with that.

This is from TNT Fabrication FB, I don't think Josh will mind.

The rear closest in the pic will be pretty much what I'll be getting. The one at the far end of the pic is one of his new version 2 setups with full 3.25" axle tubes and 9" ends. Josh says they're for 1000+rwhp cars.

Honestly, I don't know an official rating but I'm aware that there are several cats with the same setup deep in the 9's.

I wanted to go with an 8.8 initially but was never a fan of the hiltsy mount because you're welding plate steel onto an OEM cast iron center.

A new QP housing with Moser axles is only $1k. For another $170 you can have back brace too.

Do you have a link, I'd like to check out the diff that you're talking about.

Supposedly the Hiltsy mount is good if you know how to preheat the cast iron before welding. I personally knew nothing about that but Josh has done several now (50+) without a breakage.

I found the QP differential you are talking about, not a bad piece. I think I'm going to follow through with the 8.8 though. They're pretty cheap to service, it'll meet my needs, won't be stupid heavy and won't create a ton of parasitic drag.

Question for you guys smarter than me...my car is currently geared 4.10 (M6) but I have a brand new in box set of Motive 3.90's. I could use them and save myself some cash or buy a new set of Motorsport 4.10's. I can likely get the 4.10 gears new for under $150 but still, tars $150 saved. I am thinking about spraying the car so a lil higher gear couldn't hurt but I was curious how you guys felt. All my local tracks are 1/8.

The weight of the 9" all depends on what you put in it. I'd imagine it would be just as light as the 8.8 with aluminum parts.
No arguing about the parasitic drag though.

I think the 8.8 would be the best route if you plan on reusing the 31 spline Explorer axles and Trak-lok. Otherwise, you're better off going aftermarket. My Moser housing and 35 spline axles were $1200 shipped new, I'm sure you could scoop them up used for half that.

10 bolt + 4.10s + M6 + sticky tires = noisy rear and/or big explosion. I went through 2 4.10 ring and pinion sets (one Motive, then Richmond) after a ton of abuse on street tires. They start out quiet but get pretty noisy after a bunch of clutch dumps. The pinions are really small and get beat up.

There's not that much difference between 4.10 and 3.90, don't waste your money.

Cool, that's kinda what I was thinking. Yeah I agree, I'm in my 2nd set of 4.10's in the 7.5, the 3.90's are going in my new 8.8.

I've looked into the 8.8 and for the cost, you're pretty close to a 9".

You must know where to get a 9" really cheap cause a 8.8 can be done for under a grand pretty easily.

I picked up a low mile 31 spline, 4.10 trac-lok 8.8 for $100
TNT will do a torque arm mount only for $300
Material to lengthen axle tubes to stock 7.5 length $40
Custom axles $250
that leaves me $310 for a rebuild, material for mounts and misc parts

If the 8.8s were more readily available I would have def gone that route. However, I found a great deal on my 9". The thing was for sale on that other site... guy purchased a repoed ls camaro and parted it out. When it was delivered we broke it down and it was like new... im guessing it had minimal miles on it.

9", locker, 35 spline moser axles, ls brakes & 3.90 gears. 1800.00 shipped.

The 8.8 really was tnt best choice for me, I already have a new 31 spline trac loc, new 3.90 gears and I'm getting the housing for $100, should have it today. I could've done the 8.8 cheaper than I'm going to but I'll still have it done and under the car for $1500~ I wanted a MWC 9" but the cost for me to have my way really was kinda high. Yes I could've done it cheaper but if I was going to go the MWC route I was gonna go for the gusto and prolly have close to $3500 in it. I just can't justify that for my needs. On top of that I'd have to replace my driveshaft...Another couple hundred bucks. Etc etc.

The 8.8 isn't a bad deal if you plan on reusing the stock 31 spline Traclok. If you were going for big power at 33 spline and beyond then I'd be all over a 9" or S60 instead depending on app.

I grabbed an Explorer 8.8 from the junkyard years ago for $70. As time went on and my build got more out of control it made more sense to go with the 9".

TNT charges ~$600, factor in the cost of the 8.8, time cutting your tubes off, cost shipping both ways....a 9" can be found used well under $2000, New for just over $2000...with beefy axles, etc. If I could weld/fab, I'd probably have looked more closely into the 8.8.

Yeah, I understand that. My only problem with buying someone's used 9" is that it is used and likely beaten on etc. Now, i knew you're thinking well the 8.8 is used. Yes but mine will have all new parts in it...carrier, gears, bearings, axles. All of it. I already had line $600 in New parts on the shelf from some mustang stuff I used to mess with. If I hadn't already had this stuff then I probably couldn't hardly justify the money. On the other hand finding a used 9", S60 narrowed like I want it becomes even a lil more difficult to find.

And for this interested in this build I pretty much have the 8.8 ready to ship. I've gotta save a few more dollars so that I can ship my stuff so I'm holding out on pulling my rearend from under my car. No need to disable it before I'm ready.

And what's the current junk yard price for a Ford 8.8? And what Ford vehicles had them?

I gave $100 for mine. You're looking for an 8.8 from a mid 90's - 01 Explorer, F150, full size Bronco if you want the 31 spline unit or a 90+ 4.0 Ranger.
