View Full Version : Is it worth it?

Ok... so i have a y pipe coming for the camaro, so I can use all the adjustments on the trans crossmember (current y pipe is custom and cant get to all adjustments).

Also

Have an sfi bell housing to install, so the trans will be coming out to get that on.

Soooo

Might as well do a driveshaft. Currently running an LS aluminum shaft that we know wont handle traction... and the chromoly one I bought from a member is short and not worth having it modded (i could just have a custom yoke made to increase the length), sooooo Im thinking CF DS.

Is it worth it, for the strength and weight reduction?

Have not even looked into the cost... just looking at upgrading and want it as close to bullet proof as possible.

Thanks in advance.

A new CF will cost you $800-1000. I'd keep the LS in the car and keep an eye out for a used one. $400 all day long.

Nice thing about CF is that if it gets damaged and fails, it just shreds. Not so nice thing is that a sharp impact from road debris could potentially deal a fatal blow to it also.

Didnt know it was so susceptible to damage from road debris. Thats good to know. I dont mind spending 1k on one new if there is something to fear from buying used...like stress damage, etc.

Im planning on putting my skinnies/fats on the camaro with some drs... i feel like if i stick it... ill twist the ls and I dont want to hurt other stuff is all.

In my usually horribly wrong and or biased opinion, at your power level and uses of the car, a CF is completely unneeded. Get a proper aluminum DS and call it a day.

I run a 3.5 PST and have no issues.

Ok... what does a "proper" aluminum ds consist of. Sorry, bot very up to date on them.

I just dont want it coming apart if I stick it.

A larger diameter, thicker wall aluminum DS, like I said mine is 3.5 inch compared to a stock LS1 of 3 inch. I believe blackbirdws6 runs the same and his is a stick so that should calm your fears of launching hard and breaking.

I will have to check the material on mine but it's a strange unit to accommodate the S60. Nothing overly fancy and thankfully zero issues.

I assume you have a DS safety loop? If you are just messing around on the street, I would be concerned.

I have one to go in when i do the y pipe. Couldnt install it before cause my custom y pipe was stealing some of the real estate needed.

What do u guys think if i have a 1" longer yoke installed on the chromoly one that i have? Is a longer yoke a bad thing?

Longer is not always better, if it bottoms out in trans, thats bad.

I forget the exact number but there is a rough number of translating axial movement you want in the trans output housing. But from what I am getting you want the yoke to take up the short DS length vs making a longer DS?

I understand... but my chromoly shaft is 2 short... so in my case longer is required

Correct... was just a thought, instead of getting a new ds. Just getting a yoke that is 1" longer since its short now.

Gonna be a lot of whipping on the splines with the yoke farther out, BUT, they are sold so people obviously do it.

Have you contacted any DS makers, Denys, PST, Strange, etc? I would get their thoughts and go with that.

I had spoken to a local drive shaft spot to have my chromoly one lengthened (yes lengthened), however Idk that its worth the cost as compared to getting a replacement one.

That was my concern about the longer yoke as well.

I guess that will have to be my next step, to call a shop and see how they feel about a yoke thats 1" longer.

I have the aluminum PST and I think it was around $480 from a vendor on LS1tech. 3.5", 120 wall, forged yoke, and Moser 9 length. Didn't have to take any measurements (vendor already knew specs) and the fitment was perfect.

Went with the aluminum over chromoly because of 3.90 gears. The aluminum is smoother and has a higher critical speed. My previous experience with the stock steel shaft and short gears wasn't very pleasant.
