View Full Version : Diff slipping?

Ok so I notice this every once in a while... and HIGHLY doubt it's the clutch as I have had a clutch slip before and it didn't feel like this
Only happens when I have the steering wheel turned more than one full turn at low speeds (i.e. starting off from a light/1st or second gear)
If I accelerate quickly it feels like wheelspin at first but the ass end never kicks out. If the car is going straight it will blow the tires off but if im turning around a corner and doing this it's like the diff is just slipping (bone stock 10 bolt) and then it gives a slow catch as if I caught traction and it accelerates normal.
Idk how to fully explain it so if im vague let me know and I'll try harder.

How many miles are on your car? Ever changed the oil in the diff?

Did you put the friction additive in it? Also is it synthetic gear oil?

It was synthetic, and I believe the friction additive was added... it was a couple years ago it was changed

Ok so I think I'm going to retract making this thread.. I just tried it again today with a little more than half throttle on my way home and it blew the tires away so I'm thinking my half throttle "slip" feel is me spinning the tires ever so slightly

the clutches in the rear could be toast. my last 10 bolt did that and i'm pretty sure you are probably single tracking when you think its spinning. mine was. soon after its exploded into about 1000 pieces

I can always go do a burnout and see if both are spinning

LT1's dont make enough power to do so.
And we had a nova come in one time that would intermittently slip, but come to find out the pinion gear was so worn out that it started slipping off the ring gear. Bitch had been abused haha.

Lol the ring gear, wouldn't surprise me if that were happening lol

i could always spin both on the street just going around corners messed it up. at the track it would do both about 50% of the time on the other hand.

Yea idk.. like I only notice it while turning at half throttle or less... but half throttle in first gear even going straight will smoke the tires in my car... everytime I've done a burnout both have always spun over.
And the last time I really launched this thing was 3 years ago so it's not like I launch the shit out of the car all the time or anything...
Meh if it comes down to it, I'll just pick up a used 10 bolt as I wont have the money to do the rear this semester. I don't take my car to the track that often and I don't have sticky tires for it so it shouldn't be too bad...
I just don't want the increased power with the turbo kit to just shear off teeth on the ring gear or something haha.

lol cold as shit out tonight... I started in second gear around 40mph... dead hooked until 60mph and violently broke the tires loose... haha doesn't usually happen with my long gears unless its on a hard shift
