View Full Version : Will a 4L60 from a 93 fbody work behind a sbc?

Hey guys, new to the site. I bought a 93 z28 project over the winter but just now actually picked up the car and got it home. Turns out its not quite as nice as I'd like it to be and now I have a whole bunch of go-fast parts and nothing to put them in. I bought a FLT level 4 built transmission 4L60 93' specific. I do have a chevy c10 pickup with a gen 1 small block chevy and th350 trans. Im curious if the 4L60 would work behind an old school small block chevy or would there be too many differences.? I know the 4L60 has that cable that would need to be mounted and maybe change the driveshaft or converter?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

It should. It's essentially a minor upgrade to a 700R4. Cahall should be able to chime in.

You would want to rewire the lock up wiring in the trans to do away with the computer controlled system. It's not a big deal though. We usually just run a single 4th gear switch on the valve body in our retro fit 700R4s. This enables lock up to function simply by supplying a 12V source and a ground to the trans.

Does anyone know the actually differences between a 700r4 and the 1993 F-body 4L60? I know they are similar but what are the actual differences? Thanks

The '93 4L60 used a different case connector, internal wiring, valve body and separator plate. It also used a 4L60E reverse input drum and pump stator. If you notice, the '93 unit has a round, 5 pin case connector. This was needed because the unit used a unique pressure switch layout on the valve body to control the converter clutch apply. The 700r4s used a square, 4 pin case connector.

Other than the unique pressure switch layout, the valve body differed in one other way. It had an added check ball that cushioned reverse apply. The extra check ball location also required a specific separator plate with the added hole.

The added check ball allowed the large feed hole 4L60E reverse drum and pump stator to be used.

We commonly get complaints about recently rebuilt 4L60s because many builders don't even know that some of these parts are different. Mixmatching the valve body, plate, drum, or pump stator can result in either a harsh or soft reverse engagement.
