View Full Version : Time for a spool?

I have broken two sets of spider gears in my posi unit (eaton) 12 bolt 4.11
I'm really considering going with a spool. I just don't want it to kill the drivability of the car. I don't drive it in the rain or very hard out back roads. I'm just looking for some input from guys who might be running a spool on their street cars.
My car 60ft's low 1.3's
Or if anyone has a better suggestion please post up.

I wish they made the strange s trac for a 12 bolt (pretty sure it's still a Dana 60 and 9" optioon) ... it's about the baddest helical gear unit posi you can put it but it's pricey ...
I'd say spool time.

I have a locker in my 9" and its violent sometimes... and noisy many times... but... i didnt lose the drivability. .. i just took it on a 400 mile+ road trip... plus cruising.

If it sucks that bad to drive it on the street with a spool I can alway replace the spider gears again.

Are you running a support girdle? Whether you are or not I suggest the below setup.
7.5 shown but a 82-02 F-body specific 12 bolt system is available. https://www.lpwracing.com/Index.html

I would take a spool over a locker any day.

We daily drove a spool in a 4000lb 442 Olds everyday almost to the strip and car shows religiously and you really wouldn't know it's there. Spools really aren't that bad.

I've never driven a locker car, but I've heard enough stories to convince me it's either spool or wavetrac. The truetracs seem to have a reliability problem. I have a wavetrac currently and drives as good as a stock rear end car.

I've driven both for many many miles. I will tell you straight up it's more dangerous to have a posi and slicks than it is to have a spool and drag radials. The tires are the cause for concern. How many of those "Drag Week" cars do you think have a posi? Do they even make posi units that can handle 2500+hp? I have never heard of one of them crashing during the ride from track to track and sometimes they are in really bad conditions. Most of them swap to a street tire for the trips. If your car hardly ever sees rain, then get a spool ASAP. If you get caught in the rain, keep the speeds real slow like under 30 and nurse it home if you are on a slick-type tire.

Thanks for the info guys. I will be going with a spool. I think I will feel better about it when launching at the track.

I think a spool is more predictable in corners. The locking and unlocking going through a turn is dangerous. they can be very harsh in a standard shift

All my locker experience has been in trucks/jeeps from off roading. They could be violent is corners if you accelerated or decelerated. Maybe the car lockers have softer springs and are smoother? Lighter vehicle could possibly help?

My buddy joe has a spool (not sure of brand) in his bolt on only ls6 car with a midwest fab 9 and it is ridiculous when making tight turns in parking lots side streets etc. you can definitely feel the bind and the tires trying to slip. other than that tho you can't tell its there. get ready for crunchy tight turns lol. it makes you look that more badass tho pulling in to a car meet..
