View Full Version : Fixing/replacing PCV fitting on plastic intake

I bought my Camaro modded towards the end of summer (2014). Nothing crazy, just some tasteful cosmetic stuff, shorties, and an axleback. I bought a catch can and there is a U-shaped hose short hose that connects two PCV fittings. One plastic, one metal.

I went to remove the hose from the plastic fitting and it easily cracked at the base. Upon further inspection, it had been cracked before and repaired with RTV. I'm thinking this car had a catch can before but the dealer removed it. The dealer also removed the tune when it was traded in. After it was cured and repaired, the new hoses went on.

Anyway, I thought using some plastic-specific JB weld and a layer of RTV would fix it. Started it up the other night and when it got warm, I heard a vacuum leak/hiss coming from the nipple and there's a hole in the jb weld/rtv. Weird, because it was lathered on pretty good.

I want to fix this thing permanently or just replace the intake. I can get a new AC Delco ls3 intake manifold for like 225-250 (didn't consult Gail yet). I'd rather fix the plastic fitting. I'm wondering if I should get a tap and die set and get a brass nipple that screws in. Never did that with plastic, though.

At least I have a few months to fix it since it's parked. Let me know what you guys would do.

I know this is neither of your choises.... but, is that intake "Good" or is there a performance UPGRADE that you could benefit from?

I was looking into that option lol.

I have three options that I'm aware of:
1) Buy a used LS3 or maybe even a replacement AC Delco LS3 intake and possibly have it ported
2) Buy a FAST intake or comparable (600-700)
3) Buy an MSD Atomic intake or comparable (900+)

For a bone stock LS3, FAST or MSD would be overkill. I don't have plans on upgrading the heads at this time so gains would be minimal with any direction I go. I'd like to have Bo White port the throttle body and the car has a nice CAI, so a ported intake would probably be the most cost effective. I just hate to rip it all apart if I can just throw in a brass fitting and call it a day.

I will say, the 5th gens are much more friendly to work on than 4th gens, so an intake swap wouldn't be too cumbersome.

U know... i have a friend with a 2010 ss...it has a maggie supercharger on it now...so he may still have the stock intake laying around. I can put u in touch with him if that intrests u. (Obviously if no one chimes in about ur "fix" idea).

The argument of porting the stock intake has gone on for a while with the LS3 intake, honestly I wouldn't waiste the money to try it. If they car isn't going to see any big mods in the near future I would try to find a stock intake, people are making great power with stock LS3 intake.

I'm about to cam my vette and with the stock intake it should make around 460whp.

Your are right about making great power with the stock intake. Plenty of guys are making over 450rwhp cam only. Easily over 500rwh with heads. After seeing that video of the plastic intake getting sucked in after being ported, I am sketchy about it lol.

I'd just try to tap it, go slow and carefully. If it doesn't work buy a stock intake

Just an update, I'm pulling the intake this weekend and sending it and the TB to a shop in Arkansas to have ported. They said they'd tap threads into it and throw a brass fitting in for nothing. It's a certified Chevy dealer/service center/hot rod shop with a dyno. They also engineer products/packages for the 5th gen and Vette crowd. Wish they were closer lol! I'll refrain from any details since they are not a sponsor (I know ltxtech is lax, but I try to support sponsors first), but I'll be sure to post results and give out anymore info to anyone interested.
