Hey guys,I have a 95 Z28 A4, I have been having issues with my tranny (i think) lately.

I could drive my car normaly and the Transmission will shift smooth with no issues at all. But when I floor it the car wont even redline and the car will bounce and block at 4500-5000 Rpm... I could be cruising on the highway no problem i will give it gaz and will down shift and 3rd no problem and the car will go until 4500-5000 rpm...

I filmed a little clip to show... I was on the highway i come to floor it in 2nd and thats what happens...

Im suspecting complet tranny or torque

is the noise coming from the trans or the exhaust? does it feel like the car is being "held" there or does it feel like it loses momentum? sounds like a totally whacked shift table

the noise is from the exhaust, back firing like if i was boucing off the rev limiter but its blocking at 4500rpm... the transmission makes no noises or vibration

how could it be the opti if the car runs great even at 3/4 throttle the car pulls great but at wot it turns to shit

Did it just start doing this? or did you get a tune?

Does the car still have a catalytic converter on it? If so, lift the hood at night and see if the manifolds/headers are glowing. Might be a clogged cat. Another possibility is the transmission. When a 4L60E gets tired, it can't complete the shift quick enough to keep the engine from hitting the rev limiter. What condition is the fluid in? Is it dark or does it smell burnt? Does it do it at all shifts or just a certain one?

It doesn't look like a transmission issue based on your post and clip but I could be wrong.

I would bet it's a secondary ignition problem. Most likely a coil issue. What brand coil are you using currently? I have seen the same issues because a weak coil couldn't provide proper spark in the higher rpm under heavy load.

no cat on the car... i dropped the pan last summer changed 5L and the filter, fluid was ok, put 5 new liters and the car drove perfect all summer. then now this year its giving me a problem, car doesnt miss fire or anything when i go 3/4 throttle. it sometimes has a little "rough" at a red light but its barely noticable. wires and plugs got changed last summer, its the original opti since i got the car, its my 3rd summer this year. car has 150 000 km

We had a 94 Z28 that would not make any power above 4500 rpm at wide open throttle. The car would not go above 4500 rpm and therefore would not up shift at wide open throttle. Anything less than wide open throttle the car would run perfect and shift fine. It turned out to be a crappy MSD ignition coil not providing good spark under full throttle high rpm pulls. We replaced MSD coil with an AC Delco replacement coil and it fixed the problem.

Just my experience with a similar sounding condition. Your results may vary.

At WOT, it takes more voltage to fire the plugs than it does at 3/4 throttle or cruise. That's when a weak ignition component is going to show itself - coil, wires, plugs, maybe even cap/rotor.

sounds like a first test that i could do... where is that coil located? Ill go buy a new one and see if it works after...

It is bolted to the front of the driver side cylinder head.

Sometimes you can get the arcing to show up at idle, with the car sitting in the dark, by lightly spraying the ignition components with a water mist. Might show up problems with the wires, coil or cap.

so ended up buying a new coil, started taking the old apart, as soon as i touched the ignition wire that goes to the opti it broke in half, had some old wires, cut one fixed it for the right size and the car is back to be running great! feels great! im so happy! lol thanks for the help guys!

Cool! It's always good when you can fix something without spending a bunch of money. Glad you figured it out.
