View Full Version : Quieting down a T56

I've got the infamous LT1/T56 "marbles in a can" noise. It is driving me crazy at this point. I have longtubes, true duals, dump at the axle, and I can still here it. I've read you can switch to a different fluid and it will help quiet it down a bit. I had it rebuild with a stage 2 kit at TDP:

I know changing the fluid won't get rid of it completely, but anything helps at this point.

Sounds like bad bearing In the transmission new fluid will not help that.if you can hear it at idle or not moving it's probably the trans if it's when your moving I would check the rear end most rear ends start to chatter or roar when they start going bad

I know this noise it's happened to me before . Does this noise change as you push the clutch in ?

Yes its the standard issue. Push in clutch, sound dissapears. It did it before and after the rebuild. TDP said my bearings look new, so they were not replaced.

After I'm above 1200ish RPM, it isn't audible.

What fluid do you use now since my trans build I'm running royal purple sincromax , my trans is quite now but they had to replace a few gears and such that showed massive bluing . I believe that lots of my issues were my release bearing was junk and my pilot bushing was destroyed I didn't ask the trans shop why it made that noise I wish I would have that way I could maybe give you an answer

I have the same noise. Only noticed it after I put in my Pro5.0.

Mine has 208k on it, so it's to be expected. My co-worker has a 30k mile t56 swapped into a fox body and his makes the same noise.

Not unusual for the input shaft to rattle. Mine did it from the day I bought the car brand new. Drive next to a center (Jersey) barrier, and the rattle was extremely loud.

I'm using standard Dex3 from Valvoline

I read you can you gear oil and it will help, but I'm not sure of the viscosity.

My T56 makes the same noise...sounds like it's grinding up rocks in neutral, but completely goes away when the clutch is pushed in and totally quiet when in gear.

I believe what your hearing is the throwout bearing rattling around. It's due to the pull design always being in contact with the pressure plate and not fitting tight. That's why it gets quiet when you push down on the pedal. Has tension on it. Just a poor design in my eyes. Something we LT owners have to live with.

No mods to change this? It also happens at low RPM, aka, when I'm pulling off the line.

What happens if you push on the clutch pedal just enough to put some tension on the bearing? If noise gets quiet then I would say it's the throwout bearing making noise. If noise is still there then I would say pilot bearing or input shaft bearing. I've researched a little where guys replace the TOB and the pilot bearing taking care of the noise. I've also read where it's just a common thing with the LT1 cars. I just read where a guy bled his hydraulics and the noise went away. My TOB is noisy. Has been from the day I put it all together. 3000 miles later it still sounds the same. I'm gonna try the bleeding the system and see if that helps.

Pushing the clutch pedal also causes the input shaft to stop turning. I had a spare T56 from a 97, in healthy condition, and if you grabbed the input shaft, and shook it, it rattled, just like the noise that I heard from day 1 on my 94.

With regard to lubrication, Tremec does not recommend synthetics or gear oil.

Very good point. Input shaft does quit spinning when clutch is pushed in completely. My experience with input bearing going bad was more noise while driving. On gas off gas. And while in neutral with pedal out.
Pushing the pedal slightly enough to put a little pressure on the TOB may help to narrow down where the noise is coming from. Don't push it in enough to disengage the disc, just enough to apply a little pulling pressure on the bearing. My stock clutch rattled and now I have a Spec stage 2. TOB has made some noise from day one. Replaced stock tranny with a Tick Performance stage 3 built Tranny and reused same clutch and bearing. Still have same noise. I know mine is from the TOB. I put a little pressure on clutch pedal and noise goes away. Bearing doesn't fit tight and rattles around in the pressure plate before it's even installed. I noticed this on three different set ups. Doesn't fit tight into clutch fork either. This is why I say it's a poor design. Just something to check before tearing it all apart.

Lubrication - Tick performance told me good old Dexron III. Not synthetic.

I wonder if it is possible to change to the hydraulic setup. Maybe that will be quieter

You can convert to a LS style clutch but, it involves some work and a little $.
