View Full Version : Anyone up for helping me set my shift points?

So I've done a little search around and haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I have read a few threads about setting shift points for new gears, but I'm still a little confused about which tables I should adjust so I'm not bouncing off the rev limiter when at WOT (especially on the 1-2 shift). I also am somewhat fuzzy on which tables to edit for the TCC lockup. I've already re calibrated my speedo. I installed a set of 4.10's if that helps (might be changing them to 3.42's though :jest:).

Thanks!

Where are you located

I'm up in Washington.

Just noticed my title is Lurker! Haven't seen that before, pretty funny. Nevermind, it's gone now...

What software are you using.

Ah, sorry, should have added that. I'm using TunerPro.

On a side note, what areas on my tune should I look at for fuel mileage? I'm running a mail order tune from someone who really knows his stuff, but my car is currently getting around 15-16 MPG with about 70% highway. I have mild head porting done, a LT4 hotcam, and a 3000 RPM stall (with full bolt on's).

Hey now, I've already got my Jetta GLI for that! It's not so much how much gas it's using, and more about wondering if there's a bigger problem.

Edit: Plus if I'm going to be using big cam fuel I want to make big cam power!

Right now I'm getting about 15-16 MPG's to work and back which is at least 70% freeway. The TCC locks upp just fine.

I will be out of town all this week, but when I get back I will try to look at the tables

Not trying to hijack but i have a related question. I swapped from 3.23 to 3.42 on my car and only changed the tune for the speedometer calibration. Do i need to change the shift points on my normal shifting and the shifting when "transmission perform" is enabled?

Yes, you may bounce the limiter on shifts. It has to satisfy mph and rpm for the trans to shift. For example, my car is set for 5744 rpm 1-2 and 2-3 and 46, and 96 mph respectively. The trans will only shift so fast, so you have to watch the crossover point. If i raised my mph to 48-98, i hit the limiter when the trans would switch gear.

Hmm. My car doesn't really see redline but it does seem like the car shifts a bit later on the 1-2 than it used to. Like it shifts at a little bit higher rpm. I'm assuming this is due to the gears.

its been years since i've jacked with an auto transmission, but back when i was the popular thing to do was set the rpm shift point down low and just base it off the mph. i did that on a few big stall cars and had good luck with it.

just took some tweaking.

Yeah, I think all I need is a little tweaking, just not sure what to tweak, lol.

It is a trial and error method, like said, the mph and rpm control the shift points, depending on what you are wanting to do, (raise or lower) you might need to adjust the rpm, maybe the mph or both, just do it in little steps...

3.23 to 3.42 is only about 6% difference. Stock LT1 shift rpm is like 5200 which would put you at 5600ish. As long as you are not bumping the rev limiter, I think you'll be fine. If you wanted to change timing and some other settings, you could optimize this higher shift point, and it will run better.

Moe got me started down the right path to figuring it out. My car now shifts at WOT. I still need to tweak it a bit. I know the factory gauge can be inaccurate, but I think it's shifting close to 6300 (my redline).

To increase fuel economy, you will want to increase timing in the lower rpm, low to midrange load areas. This kills your emissions passage capability, but can net at 1-2 MPG increase on the highway.

dont trust the stock gauges, datalog and watch what it shifts at and what your max rpm is between shifts. if i trusted the stock gauge my car is shifting at 6600 and the heads cam car shifts at 7k. both are set for 5744 lol

FWIW Tunercats now scales your shift points/TCC along w/ the speedo recalibration for gear changes on autos. Works good for stock cars, I'd imagine it'd at least give you a decent starting point on a cammed car.

Anything different from factory will cause the tranny to shift at a different RPM because now the presence of additional Tq and horsepower, the pcm cannot keep up. and if you have a good size stall it becomes more apparent, I have had to set some shift points as low as 5400 in order for the trans to shift at the desired RPM..
