Hey guys, im wondering what your guys' cooling systems consist of? Esp for a front my turbo set-up with a stand up radiator.
Im running a stand up Griffin Rad (standard one everyone seems to use) and a single pusher (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-16925/overview/)
160* thermostat, fans are turned on early aswell. Stock water pump. Have no room for an electric.
Im ordering another fan, so that should help. but the car is still getting hotter than id like...over 210ish*
What do you guys reccomend? Whats your set-up?
Thanks!

Stock radiator, twin derale 16925 pushers in front, and a meizure HD ewp.
Never came above the first line above the base number.

you still running an air damn? any shroud around the fans?

Almost the same thing here except I've got an A/C condenser that the Derale Pushers are mounted to, and my radiator is a BeCool Custom Fit unit (much thicker than stock). I made 3 hotlap track passes and saw a max temp of 215* after the third pass.

Wish I could run an ewp but can't, but only having one fan is hurting for sure.
Mine was getting hot just driving down the road, rolling into it several times but not running it hard by any means.
Blkchevyz - no air damn. All the stock shit in the front is gone but I haven't cut the bumper cover up or anything. I'm sure it's not an ideal set up.
I'm wondering if my thermostat is messed up? Anyone ever have an issue with one? Gonna replace it with another 160* unit.

I had a Griffin rad and a 16" pusher fan (can't remember which one). Nose was cut out, 160* t stat. Never had an issue. Always ran at 170* ish. I also ran an oil cooler, not sure how much it helped.

Stock Caprice rad, stock dual electric fans that turn on early, stock WP.
I can drive it around all day and it never heats up.
At the end of the 1/4 mile the needle goes up a bit but it quickly goes back down to normal just coming back to the pits.
Is your turbo close to the rad? Do you have a blanket on the turbine??

My turbo is close yes, and I run a blanket. Blanket works good enough that you can hold your hand on it after it's hot lol.
Here's a pic, not sure how we'll you can tell how close it is.

Maybe my water pump is just wore out ?

does it run cooler at highway speeds? or is it always that hot?

Once she's warm she's warm haha. I haven't drove it that much tho.

The turbo is close but the blanket should help keep everything cool. Do you still have the plactic air damn under the car, below the rad?
How high do you spin your motor? I've seen water pump impellers spin on the shaft @ high RPM. I've welded mine to the shaft to prevent this from happening.

That'll be a good indication on where your problem is.

could always drill a couple holes in your tstat to see if letting a little more coolant past it would help.
also wrapping the downpipe some might help.

I know it's close and it's not ideal but its what I got haha. I don't have the air damn no, I still have it though. I haven't spun it very high yet at all. Cruising anyways. Just trying to work these bugs out.
It's getting got cruising.

Gonna try this! The down pipe will be wrapped soon also

also do you have anything open up so air can get to the radiator? still running fog laps?
might want to try and just make a new air damn to get some air directed up to it since your radiators is probably forward of were the the factory air damn is suppose to be.

No, haven't cut the bumper or anything if that's what ya mean. No fog lights. So I have those for air movement lol.

Get the air damn on there and pray.
If you are running hot at idle, you need a better fan or a more efficient fan setup.

Just got my air damn, gonna throw it on and see if cursing temps drop. Ordering another fan, hoping that'll make the difference. If I remember I run the same fan as you, only just a single until now.

Bump! Got another fan on it, it's a smaller 9" but I had it laying around. Still runs hot. Have the air damn on now to!
Anyone ever have issues with thermostats? It's a 160 but it's quite a few years old now. Also thinking maybe my waterpump itself is subject? It's never been replace. But I've never had cooling issues with this car until the turbo set up.
Any ideas a guys? This thing might just be a track car lol

How much timing is in it?
How well is your hotside insulated?
Turbo blanket?
Are the fans pushers/pullers or shrouded?

Are you using pusher fans? If so, advice. Use the Derale units that shownomercy and myself are using. They seem to be the only ones worth a dang.

Running pushers, one is the same as you guys, other is a smaller unit I had around, which is also a pusher.
Snm- hotside is wrapped, and have a blanket. My dp isn't wrapped yet. But will be.
Also, can't remember timing off the top of me head.

Try removing the thermostat or drilling a bunch of holes in it and try it out. If it's better, change the thermostat.
You might also want to take the front cover off the WP and check if the impeller is a little loose on the shaft. They are just pressed on and I've seen one become loose. I welded the impeller to the shaft on mine.

I cut the spring on the thermostat. Which is the same as drilling holes right? It was pretty gummed up looking too
Just let it idle and still getting hot (over 210) but haven't drove it yet.
I'm starting to wonder about my pump like you said. Might check out the impeller today if I get around to it

Have you properly bled it? (stupid thing to ask but never know)
Fastbird

It shouldn't heat up like that just idling. Even when I was fighting temps in my car when I had the FMIC mounter horizontally, it would idle at 190 all day long. Soon as a loaded up and started moving it would shoot up.
Really dumb question........have you pressure tested the system? See if it's got a leak somewhere. Also, how's the radiator cap, good? Does coolant appear to be cycling if you pull the rad cap with it running?
gunters96lt1
04-12-2014, 05:37 PM
Yep she's bleed. Last time I filled it (drained to fix something) it was cycling.
Cap seems fine.
Have not pressure tested but it's parked in my shop all the time and never see any coolant.
I had it idling today and it took longer to warm up with the thermo spring cut. So I drove it down the street and back, then it got hot.
I have my heater hose plugged (deleted the heat system) but they're not leaking.

Aside from checking for air traps (usually an upper radiator hose that rises up higher than the radiator before it drops in), you may need to check into what sean said. Pressure test your coolant system. Hopefully you don't have a head gasket issue forming. Also, you need to know what AFR and timing you are running. This can cause overheating as well.

go make a few pulls and see if the hoses get rock hard, if they do its an internal issues, crack in the block, head gaskets, crack in the head..... if that tests out good, try to check the water pump.
I ran into heating issues badly with mine, went to an electric pump, helped but still would get warm, built an orifice plate to delete the T stat helped, but just made the car take longer to get too hot, never would fix it, went to a double pass radiator and i have never seen over 200 after a hot day at the track.

I've got aftermarket rad hoses, that are solid if that makes any sense. They're kinda cheesy but work. I'm gonna pull the water pump and see how it looks.

stand up griffin, two pushers, 160 thermo stat
While i haven't tested it, but it could probably sit in traffic for hours with no problems...

You can try using some Redline Water Wetter too... I use it with my 50/50 Green Coolant but you can use straight water and it will run a lot colder.

Yeah the car needed more fan. I was starting to think the impeller was spinning on the shaft in the waterpump but it wasn't. I stuck another fan on the car, and it helps a lot. Still gets around 210ish but doesn't get any hotter.

what radiator are you running? the 25241 or the 55241?
the research i've been doing lately the 25... has a problem keeping up with the smaller tubing, 1 vs the 55241 1.25
