I'm looking at a 94 TA, just like mine but bone stock, hard top, and about 120k. The guy says the trans is shot, and that it pulls out fine, but needs to be revved up to 3500-5000 to shift into 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
Could it be the torque converter? Maybe something throwing the computer off? I don't really know because my stock trans is working great, but I have run into issues with it that were only computer-related.

I guess if its cheap and local, you could head over there, check out the fluid level, and if its empty just tell him its sold and take it away. haha.
I cant help you here though. Still a transmission noob.

He said its driveable, and I will be driving it home (since its pretty close). I'm trading my 96 Grand Am that I dont drive for it. He just wants a good reliable car in turn.
I'm hoping it just needs a fluid change and filter or something. That would be awesome.

Ideally you would want to pull for codes to see if the trans was causing any. Is there an SES light on? Will want to factor in the costs of replacing the transmission to see if its really a good deal.
I burned up 3-4 in a 60e and had to drive home in second. Even first and second slipped really bad, burned up the clutches.

Keep in mind that you can find a good used one for 300-600 bucks depending on where you look. If its cheap then i would snatch it up.
I bought my camaro for 1300 and will be buying a 400 dollars trans this week.
1300+400= 1700 12 second car. :)

My grand am is worth about as much as a stock roller haha. I plan on buying a built trans for my TA, so I'll have the one from that to go in if need be. I don't think there's an SES light, but I haven't personally driven it or actually seen it in person.
And IronOutlaw, for a couple hundred more you could prob pick up a t56 swap.

I know its very tempting, but the cheapest swap ive found here were 1200 for just a tranny and 1500 for a swap. With my dd out of comission now im gonna just stick with an auto and get it done fast.
