Hey guys several weeks back I came across a great deal on a original SLP upgraded rear end with AAM cover from a 96 SS Camaro it has the torsen diff I was really excited to find one from a low mileage car and in good condition. But the past few weeks I have read some postings around and about that has me thinking should I install it? most of the posting's I found says the Auburn is good for straight and cornering where the Torsen is only good for cornering and will break easily if you drag race. A couple of years ago I came across a deal on my 93 formula I really wanted to do something different with this car than my other T/A's I mostly use it for a daily driver but in the years ahead I really would like to get into some amatuer auto cross and light road racing and I thought this rear end setup would be a decent upgrade compared to the stock diff. And also everywhere I looked they mentioned the Auburn being the upgraded rear end SLP offered so how was the torsen offered??? and what years was it available??? If any members have any advise or suggestions it would be helpful thx

My 97 hawk came with the torsen from SLP and it liked it I drag raced it and it never failed me it's a tuff unit I broke the ring and pinion but never the diff from what I was told the torsen is suppose to be good for the road course . I still have the slp split center pin for running 4.10 gears.

I believe the Auburn was only offered in the LS1 cars .

Correct SLP switched to Auburn in 1999.
Edit: just read your post better. Between the 2 clutch style (Auburn) is best when going for handling.

I've run the torsen at the track years ago and with sticky tires it sucked. One wheel peel, and clunked a lot. Also, when I would move my car around during the winter in the driveway it would get stuck all the time with one wheel spinning. On the street, it was great as long as both wheels have equal traction. There are no clutches to wear out so that's one plus.

How would you guys rate it overall compared to the stock rear end? for a daily driven car will it behave well on the street? and would this rear end provide any gains in performance over the stock unit if I plan to get into any future autocross competition's?

If street and autocross are you biggest concerns then I would take the Torsen over the auburn.

There ok. Just don't get stuck. lol
Honestly a stock 10 bolt will do fine. If you want to change things up down the road. You will probably at the point of upgrading to a stronger rear like 12 Bolt, S60, 9 inch anyways.

Ive never had good luck with any limited slip, everyone will try and break the right rear loose around right hand corners when the power comes in and tries to lift the right rear wheel. But I like to steer with the rear of my car....lol

Wouldn't a Watt's link fix that?
