I feel I already know the answer but I will ask anyway. I have a block that has been bored .040 over and a couple of the cylinder walls have some good scratches in them, enough for the engine to smoke under hard acceleration. Does this mean the block is done or can something other than putting in sleeves take care of it?

The block can hold .060 over, but you might have cooling issues. I've never tried a .060 over engine in a 4th gen F body.

About .060 over is the most you're really gonna get out of an LT1 block. Fortunately, they're cheap and relatively plentiful.

Have the cyl walls sonic checked. There is a big bore option I am looking into but its going to cost major coin.

Will this big bore option involve the stock block? I looked into converting a block. But when it was said and done with opti provision ect. The price was astronomical
OP sorry for highjack.

Yes it will involve reworking a stock block.

I've never had the sonic testing done. What's the going rate on something like that? I hate to trash the block since it's clearanced, zero decked...

lol ya i figured that. just want to know how he is getting it done. and maintain good strength and ability to hold higher power numbers.
I abandoned this idea while back. because i couldn't figure out a way for it to hold boost.

think about what could be done with a 4.125 bore and 9.5" deck.
unfortunately i wont be able to attempt this till after i get the shop up. so it maybe a year from now depending on how work goes.

me 2. to keep the cost down i have been looking at rod and piston combinations that will get me close to a 9.5 deck with off the shelf parts.
so far. 400 ci combo.
3.75 stroke
6.2 rod
4.125 bore x1.445 je piston
=9.520 deck.
stock block hight 9.02 +.5" spacer 9.520" deck.
427ci combo.
4" stroke
6.3 rod
4.125 bore x 1.145 je piston
9.445 deck min.

i don't have the tooling or experience to pull this off by my self. i will have to find a machinist crazy as me to make it happen.
