View Full Version : Might be tearing it apart again, burning oil this time

Burns oil BAD on startup, stops 100% when warmed up after about 10 minutes of driving. NO blow-by (can't even feel any pressure coming out of the port for my catch can), does it on accel, decel, cruise, and idle. No oil in IC or piping. had some oil in intake, deleted the PCV and put just a catch can on it, took intake off and cleaned it out with brake cleaner along with the intake runners on the heads. Was so bad that 2 of the intake valves had oil on them. Thing has about 1600 miles on it if that, 800 on the new heads. Car runs great, loves boost, just smokes until warm I thought it would be valve seals but its smoking BAD. Agh, always something, will do a compression test tomorrow. Any ideas before I rip it apart?
(I hate to admit it, but I mentioned a 5.3 to the girlfriend and she shot that idea down fast. I think she's been talking to Larry.)

Im glad she repeated all that she and I talked about.
Seriously though... keep us posted on the compression test.
You sure its not the turbo pushing oil?

Intake gaskets. I used a junk set after a freshen up and they did not seal. Was pulling oil from the lifter valley into the intake runners. Might be worth a peek
Ok is it still burning oil after having the intake off?

Almost positive about it not pushing oil. I might toss a restrictor in it tho to test. I do have 80psi cold oil pressure.
Tried intake gaskets when I cleaned the intake. Unless it blew out on me.
Lacey cracks me up. Says that I can't swap to an LS because they're douchebags and my car is her excuse to go to the shootout to hang out lol.

Ummm, she makes great point. I believe most of that is directly from the LTX handbook.

Does the engine burn oil or the turbo?
Hows your turbo drain setup?
Are you running synthetic oil?
What kind of cold temps are we talking?
Ryan Stout
01-25-2013, 01:51 PM
I'm about 75% sure it's engine, gonna pull the DP today.
Drain is a -10an out of the turbo, 45* fitting, about 6" to the front of the oil pan, no curves, about a 5-6" drop.
I run Rotella 10w30, white bottle, non-synthetic.
Cold as in anywhere from 15-65* startup and smokes til its been at 160* for about 2 minutes.

Looks white in the pic but it smells like oil and looks blue in my rearview.

Seans issue was pooling oil in the intake iirc. His acted very similar to that

Still don't know where mines coming from either. Runners in the heads are spotless though. Valve seals need doing as they dried out from 3 years on a stand.

My PCV was causing that, then I deleted it. If nothing else at least everything is well lubricated lol.

I'll pull t off tonight. I had a local diesel shop rebuild it 2 years back, but that doesn't mean anything. I'll check em out. I was thinking maybe since its a piston ring type seal that my oil pressure is too high for it possibly? I'll have to watch the oil pressure and smoke and see if its correlated.

I did that a few weeks ago hoping to fix it and its stil doing it :-(. Yeah I'm really hoping to run True Street. She runs good (when warm). I'll drive it 50 miles at a time so the cruise will be no problem. I'd like to go high 9s as it sits. Only problem is I have no bar, probably gonna order a 6pt with the tax check, not sure if that'd cover me though especially being a 'vert.

Ok guys, whoever called turbo gets it! I guess I had 2 problems on my hands. Let car sit a few days so oil can puddle, pull turbo. Oil coming from center section into exhaust housing. Exhaust pipes dry, compressor side has a very very small oil coating, took a clean paper towel to find it. Now... Turns out I was wrong about my drain, it has about 1.5-2" drop, from turbo to a 90* to 6" of -10an to a 45* into the pan. Would've been a 3" drop but since I put stock springs in it with 28s it raised the rear a bit. Sound like a drain issue or more of a too much oil pressure when cold or just a turbo? Garrett uses piston ring type seals iirc, kinda hard to go bad.

This is one reason i am doing a scavenger pump, i think i can get away with out one but i don't want to take the chance and let it pool like i've seen so many do, hope you get it figured out soon man.

Aaaaaaannndddd she needs a new shaft/exh wheel and a rebuild kit. Damn, now I gotta deal with forced inductions again...

Very true Larry. Still sucks lol. And at least it's tax time. I get back roughly $2600 every year. So timing was good. Just dunno if I want to try this for the 3rd time with this turbo...

Well, a place recommended to me has the stuff I need, half the price that forced inductions wanted 2 years ago. AND they actually respond to their emails. Haven't heard from FI yet and I emailed em Friday. I'm sure by now everyone knows my opinion on them though.

Looks like I'm gonna give this thing 1 last shot. If it dies this time around its getting twin 67s. I figured the last time I had it fixed it was from an iffy local place. Worth a 3rd chance I guess.

Update: turbo is at superior turbo. They've been great. $400 for a wheel, bearings, and a backing plate. Hoping to have the car running again in a couple weeks.

Is that good.
I have no turbo experience.. I know ebay turbos are cheap... but I can only assume you have good stuff.

Yeah its a Garrett. $400 is what the place I got it from wanted just the wheel for. Good deal IMO.
