So I put on my ss spoiler yesterday. After driving around I noticed my ABS inop light was on. Typical if you have a blown 3rd brake light. My wife says my 3rd brake light was working but I had swapped to a led brake light anyone experience this before or is it just coincidence and I have a brake issue?

My car is a 96... so i dont know if anything is different...

I put mine on and had no issues..................................but, here is the kicker.....

I always have an abs inop light, and trac light... because they are both removed from the car... lol

Sorry bud.

If you mean for me.. I dont care about the light.. if you mean for him... I think he may really be worried about the abs not working...

O.P. any chance you have a short that popped something while you were putting the spoiler in?

This is what I would have asked... Sounds like something may have been shorted on the install...

Was talkin bout both of you lol, I have also thought bout putting an led 3rd brake light in do you have to (cut) wires or is there a plug?

The question would be is (does your abs work still) when the light is on? I would do a hard braking and see if it pulses like its sposed too or just locks up

This is normal when switching from incandescent to LED lights (which have different resistances). The fix is to wire a relay somewhere along the line so the voltage goes through the coil and returns 12V. I did this years ago, so I don't recall the exact procedure. My relay is just behind the third brake light...though I don't have an SS spoiler so there was plenty of room. You may need to splice in somewhere else. I have a schematic of it on my home computer that I can get you later if you haven't already found it.

EDIT: shbox always comes through. See below.

Ah ok I have plenty of room in the hatch under the trim panel. And I cut and wired my factory plug in on my spoiler so I can remove it easily.if need be.

So what kind of relay do I need exactly?

I had some lying around that I grabbed from. I don't recall there being any identifying marking on it. Pretty sure a standard relay will work fine as long as it has the 85 -> 86 terminals.

Didn't see your response. Sorry about the delay.

I just did this yesterday, and it worked like a charm. I figured I would snap a couple pics while I was at for the people (like me) who try to avoid electrical problems.
I wired the relay into the spoiler harness so I wouldn't have to cut up the harness in my car, and so if I should ever sell the spoiler, the next Z28 owner won't have to worry about the ABS light!
This is just a write up following shoebox's wiring diagram.

What you will need:
- Wire strippers
- An additional length of wire (I used less than 8")
- 2 spade clips
- Heat shrink (or electrical tape)
- Soldering iron if you want to solder it (always a good idea, however I did not solder this time)
- Automotive relay (I used the one in the fuse box under the hood for the air pump)

Directions:
- First remove the trim on the underside of the rear hatch.
- Pull out the excess wiring to the spoiler so you know how much you have to work with.
- Cut the spoiler harness in the desired location and strip enough insulation off each end of the wires so that you can twist them back together. (pic)
- Cut your extra length of wire in half and strip the insulation off both ends.
- Attach the spade connectors to one end of each of your extra wires. (pic)
- Now slide a length of heat shrink on both wires of the spoiler harness hanging out of the car. (pic)
- Reconnect the part of the spoiler harness that you cut off.
- Now connect your extra wire with the spade clip on it to this same location, making a 'T' with the wires. (pic)
- Slide the heat shrink over your newly made connection, and apply heat to shrink it closed.
- Do the same for the other wire.
- Optional, but I wrapped my relay with some foam padding so it's not clunking around when I go over bumps.
- Now attach the spade clip from the red wire in the harness to the spot on the relay labeled 86.
- Attach the spade clip from the black wire in the harness to the spot on the relay labeled 85.
- Reconnect the spoiler harness to the car harness.
- Start your car and make sure the ABS light is off.
- Tuck the relay and additional wiring back up into the spoiler (pic)
- Reinstall your hatch trim and you're done!

Great write up, I'm going to knock this out in the next few days....now since the ss wing makes the abs inop light come on, does it actually make the abs inoperative?

I would do it, but since I removed my abs and trac control... the damn lights are gonna stay on either way....

This is a very useful thread I will be looking at this soon when I install my ss spoiler.

Yes, the ABS is inoperative, and the cruise control will also not work
