I have been told by 3 people, all gm fanatics, that I should NOT modify my 93 Trans Am. When I ask them why, they say "that car is going to be worth good money in the future and modding it will just **** it up" It is a heavily optioned 93, hardtop, auto. Running through the vin decoder its a 1 in 7 or 8 I think.. If that means anything.. I dunno. I guess its fairly low production number, being 9695th off the line. It's a clean, rust free, accident free car so thats a plus..
They go on to say that "thats the car that re-sparked the horsepower wars between ford and gm, it was the first time in a long time the firebird/camaro was faster than the stang etc... I dunno..??

I think 93xx is a higher production number as I believe they only made around 16k cars in 93. I have 2427 or something like that and my car is modded to hell and back.
I am not tryin to be a dick or anything, but there's nothing special about your 93 that would make it a collectors item in the future unless it has no miles and is absolutely perfect amd kept that way. There weren't a lot of options in 93 either. Nothimg thay would warrant collectability IMO. Give us a description of what you've got....color, options, etc.
IMO.....mod away and enjoy the car like you want to.

im a 93 as well and modding it by the day, although i agree with the HP return piece i also agree with Sean...nothing special enough to sit on it , unless like he said it has ALL the bells and whistles, rare options and garage kept with 1k miles or something rediculous...i say enjoy it...im enjoying mine...

I don't think there is anything wrong with making a car perform better, more efficiently, and fit you better.
What are you planning? IMO it wouldn't be good to cut up a car like that. However if you are just bolting on parts there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you are afraid of it loosing value then keep all the stock parts. Bag and tag everything and keep it safe. When you do sell the car you can either return it to stock and sell the goodies separate with the car or let the person know you have all the stock parts if they want it original. The only thing I can think of that would mess up a sale of a car is if it is heavily modded some people might think it was abused and might be unreliable. Chances are though people like that aren't going to want to pay an asking price anyway.
At the end of the day is it is your car.... not theirs... they have their opinion but it is your decision. I say go for it.

I have a small collection of cars. My 1993 is my "newest old car." I have a neighbor with 30 cars, all old and some rare. He and I have discussed the pros and cons of modifying or personalizing cars many times. The general answer we come up with is unless it is a 1 of a kind, or ultra low production car (Museam quality), then doing what you want to it doent lessen the value because, here is the big reason - no car is worth anything untill someone is willing to buy it. I have a 1930 Model A, all orginal, collectors "value" is $14K, real value is sentimental to me and $0 casue it is not for sale and no one has offed me $14k for it, same with my 56 chevy, my valiant, and my Corvair. My Camaro was a pristine 39K mile car when i got it in 2001. I have since moderatly modified it. I was still able to get collector insurance on it, but KBB is still only $6k ish... 1993 Firehawks and Camaro Pace Cars have some more value than even highly optioned standard production cars but since the market downturn even the value on the "specialty" versions have dropped. Dont expect in our lifetime to see a stock 1993 f-body pass Barrett Jacksons block. I build all my cars to enjoy and drive. None of my cars are concours quality. I still drive the Model A to the beach and back atleast once a year (150 miles round trip.) They are meant to enjoy, so enjoy yours and make it like you want it to be. Some people like to keep cars 100% stock and some like to 100% mod them. It is all personal taste.

I say have fun do what you want my car is a firehawk 1 of 4 green hard top formulas in 97 and it sure ant stock no more and it only has 23,000 on it people freak out my nabor has a 02 firehawk that only has 800 miles on it and it spends its life in a bag I think that's crazy because it will be worth money when he is 80 years old what good is that .

I see your guys point, I can see my car not being worth much in the future, because of miles mostly, I put 10k miles on it from April 6 2011 up untill I parked it 3 weeks ago... It's got all options except T-tops, and cd player. Black on black, leather etc. It's not in mint condition by any means, but its good for its age. I guess I'll just build up the street warrior that I want and not worry about value. It's already worth more than what I paid (i got a steal).. so whats to loose?

You can at least do full bolt ons and keep all of the stock parts. That would wake it up a lot and you can easily turn it back to stock.

not to be a dick but your car wont even sell for 3k where i live. and 93 isnt the best year really, its speed density, batch fire injection, no t tops no cd player, its just a car. Drive it like you stole it and dont worry. I used to have a 88 honda prelude si 4ws...it was road n tracks car of the year, it beat every car at the slolam including lambos the back wheels turn, it handled like a orgasim. But no one else knew what it was or cared except the people who have owned one or drove it. your car is eve less unique. I sold that preluded for $750 to a buddy who nearly wacks off to it. cars come and go just like women, and its only worth what some one will pay. a 93 mustang cobra is more collectable, sorry, mod away its just a early 4th gen with no t tops it aint much to write home about in my book. and its not a convertible and i bet its a auto 700r4/4l60

I got my car in 99 waited for quite awhile (2004) to do anymore than bolt on's to it. I figured it would be worth more $ especially after 02, but then I realized that only matters if I plan on selling it. Since I had no plans to sell it I began making it the car I wanted and have never looked back.

hoursetraitor I had a 3rd gen prelude as well, the handling that car was capable of was down right amazing, no lie.
Around here, you cant pick up any nice Trans am for less than 3500, I looked at a TON of different ones before I found mine, I was not going to settle for a rusty clusterf**k. By the way, cd player was offered in 93, Just not many people choose to to get it. lol

The only reason not to mod your car is because its a sickness and you cant stop once you start. Call my bank and ask if dont believe me. lol

93's unite!!! When I did one of those VIN lookups, mine was like one of 6 with the same exact options as mine. Too bad it doesn't have any of them anymore! :( Mod bug hit me pretty good. I would love to find another 93, bone stock though and clean.
What was the question? lol

LOL I love this site already. A bunch of crazies just like me! That is the "other problem" Once I start, I cant stop. I have alot more responsibilities to take care of now than when I did my first full out build on a car, but I'm sure i can still make it happen. lol I priced out a "Dream" setup on the car today at work while bored, came up with about 35k worth of just parts I could buy lol... yeah.. not going to happen...
