I'm in the process of gathering the parts for a hotcam swap. I won't be doing this until my brother gets his Mustang out of the garage (he graduates in December) but anyway....

I have a local tuner in mind, and I need to contact him to find out his pricing.

Would it be beneficial for me to get it it tuned by a real tuner or will I be fine with a mail order tune? My buddy has a hotcam'd '94 Z and it runs fine untuned, but I know I'll be able to get another 5-10 rwhp out of it plus I need to get EGR tuned out so my SES light goes off. How much will I expect to pay for a real tuner to do it? I mean if it's only $50 I suppose it's worth it because it'd be nice to get it on the dyno for that.

around here, its $100/hr for dyno tuning. If I were you, I'd just go with a mail order tune.

Go with the Pcm4less or Madz28, both are VERY quality mail order tuners. They should be able to get your setup near spot on since they do LOTs just like it.

I would still have a dyno tune in mind for the future, but that would only be for getting the A/F right on.. You more than likely wont gain too much more HP, usually the mail order tunes are very close.

Yeah, I was planning on going with MadZ28 if I did a mail order tune. I won't be doing much to the powertrain (new suspension, and some body work is next) until I get out of college (2 years) so I figure it'd be worth it to get the cam dialed in right.

With the hotcam i would go with a mail order tune. If you were doing a le2 package or something drastic, then i would definitly go with a dyno.

As many hotcam cars that have been done over the years, I think you'd be FINE with a mail order tune.

Yeah, I'm sure it will be fine in drivability, but I think I can gain a few more horsepower and plus I'll have a dyno sheet. I guess I was wondering if that was worth the extra $$$. Plus if I have him do it, I bet he'd do minor adjustments (like if I went to 4.11 gears) for free/dirt cheap

You will more than likely be fine with a mail-order on just a hot cam. It's a common setup, and I'm sure pcmforless has got that tune nailed. If you do something a little more extreme, I'd take it to Tulsa, OK and have Ed Wright dyno tune it (www.fastchip.com (http://www.fastchip.com)). He's a helpful, nice guy as well as one of the best in the business. You aren't too awful far away from his shop.

BTW, he's $550 for an LT1 $650 for LS (Dyno tuning price last that I remembered anyway).

Yeah, I'm not paying $550 for a tune on a baby cam'd car. $350 is my max budgeted allotment for tuning.

I'd just get a mail order tune. If you set on a dyno tune talk to MC Racing, they're in Overland Park and are pretty good. (913) 789-9888 I've got a pcmforless tune and used MC for a base pull (3 back 2 back w/ AF reading) $65.00.

I bet he'd give me a pretty good deal.

If you do decide to go bigger, I HIGHLY reccommend Ed. You really aren't far from one of the best tuners around. He won't let that car leave until everything is dialed in right.

mail order tune would be good on a hotcam because its so popular.

my cam on the other hand would probably be kind of a shot in the dark.

Yeah, I'll find out how much my tuner wants and if its $300+ I'll just go with a mail order tune.

Too bad you don't live closer. Speed Inc. Is giving LTX members a 15% discount right now on dyno tunes..

I used Madtunner (madz28) and I think you would be fine with a mail order tune.

1+ for Ed Wright. He only gets $350 for a mail order, and with that cam, it'll be spot on. He was damn near spot on, with my 383 w/242 duration cam :)

I would just get the madz28 tune and then later on with more mods get it dyno tuned at Muscle Car.

btw how are those valve cover gaskets working?

I still plan on talking to Keith before I do anything. It's gonna be that setup for a couple years so why not get it dialed in right and get a dyno sheet as well.
