i have a lap top only for my car. and i have the LM-1 wideband hooked up to my lap top. i want to get one of the downloaded tuners just to see if its something i want to get into before spending money on a program like LT1 edit, and so on. i have tryed to look online for it, but i have no clue what i am looking for. some insight would be helpfull. i know i have to get a cable, and ware to get it, but the other stuff i don't know. my car is a 97 M6 with a OBD1 converson from madtuner.com with generic tune for my car's setup.

all and all, i want a data logger/realtime view/code view and clear codes/ and be able to change a few settings(injector size, spark timing, ect)

but if i can't get that in a free download, thats fine just looking for a starting place.

Won't be able to get that in a free download. About the best you'll be able to do "Free" would be TTS Datamaster for logging, but that's only for 20 logs, then you gotta pay. Tunercats and LT1 Edit you gotta pay to play.

I haven't used LT1 edit but I can vouch that tunercat is cheaper. It is also easy to use and isn't locked to any vins.

I use LT1Edit and Datamaster. LT1Edit is ok but I am thinking about switching to Tunercats because I keep hearing its more user friendly and its not vin # specific. Datamaster is great. It's only like $90.00 which I think isn't bad.

the guy that i got my PCM/tune from is www.madtuner.com (http://www.madtuner.com) he sells a converted OBD1 PCM that is plug and play. plus the mail order tune included. im sure other guys do the same way. this is the tuner i went with. super nice, pull out OBD2 PCM and unplug then put up on a shelf. plug in OBD1 PCM and put back in place. start car and drive off.

There's nothing to convert.... you buy an obd I pcm, plug it in, swap knock sensors, and drive the car away...

+1. The converted PCM is 250. 30-60 bucks for a pull out OBD1 PCM and switch to a 1994 knock sensor (~30$). Save money and do this. All the tuner is doing is changing the resistor in the PCM to match the resistance in the OBD2 knock sensor.

Use TunerPro

Or just put a resistor in the PCM and you don't have to worry about changing knock sensors. Then its just a matter of swapping PCM's back and forth. That's all I've done over the last 12 years or so, still on my original knock sensor :)

ok so i buy a OBD1 PCM from a junk yard. change knok sensor and put in car. and the car still runs like crap cuz of no tune. and if you don't have a cable and program, or knolage of how to tune. so then i tune a stock PCM and ruin all the hard work i just put into my motor. cheaper to just get the OBD1 PCM that is already set and tuned(genaric) to plug and play.
WAY BETTER DEAL!!!!!!!!!!! $250 for tuned PCM or $4000 paperwaight?

Plug and play systems like that are fine. Nothing wrong with that. You could potentially save some money by buying a used obd1 pcm, swapping knock sensors and sending it to Solomon to get a custom tune flashed in. Although it is more work, in the end the result is going to be the same.

Dude nobody said to run your shit untuned..... Lol

You could do the swap yourself and get mail order tune, or send in the obd I pcm to be programmed before you ever put it in the car... imagine that

thats right. more work. and you could be taking a chance that the junk yard PCM in no good. IMO its easy for a NOOB to just buy it this way. don't get your pantie all wadded up.

ouch :shiner:

all JY I have ever seen offer a 30-60 day warranty for electronics like starters, PCM, alt, etc.... Again I say though there isn't anything wrong with the kit. You just paid someone to do the work for you. Nothing wrong with that.

The OBD1 systems have a downfall that sucks... if the connections gets interrupted during programming the PCM is toast and has to be repaired...
I am still a newb to tuning also. I get bold and program outside of the garage... if I fry mine I carry a spare. It was as easy as swapping the PCM, loading the VIN and program. In the future you should now have that ability.

This really shouldn't be a deterrent. If you take the proper precautions, like using a laptop on wall socket power and not the battery, not trying to do something while it is loaded (yes, sit still and let it do its thing), and turning your screen saver off, it'll do just fine. I've flashed my PCM quite a few times and have had no issues with doing it. JMHO.
