My trans in my 94Z lost all forward gears but first. I found a rebuilt trans out of a 95 Impala SS on my local Craigslist. Besides the tailshaft housing, will it work ok in my car? I can put my tailhousing on the other trans. Are they the same length, and the electronics the same between the 2 of them, etc.

Thanks,
Brian

The short answer is no

If no other options are avalible i can try to expain what would need to be done for the swap... Your aware of tailshaft housing differences, thats a a straight swap. The valvebody and pump are a little bit different in that torque converter lockup on the 95 is the pwm style. I THINK you can simply unplug the pwm solenoid and stake the pwm valve in place to allow normal operation on with your 94 pcm (ill ask my boss tommorow to confirm, he owns carolina performace transmissions)... The only other difference im aware of is the shifter shaft itself. If im not mistaken the 95 impala will have a column shifter, if it does the shift shaft sticking out of the trans is to long and incorectly oriented for use in an fbody. If the car it came from has a floor shifter this isnt an issue.

By no means am i an expert, ill ask Shane tommorow....

Thanks for the help Firey. I guess the search will continue for a good used trans.

Sucks to hAve a 94. I'm searching for a trans myself and all that will directly bolt is another trans from another 94.

I think you can use an early truck trans with minimal modifications (2wd 4.3 or 5.7). I for some reason think they started using 4l60e's in 92 and would be electrically compatable untill 94. Youed have to switch out shift shafts (involves dropping the pan and removing 2 bolts) and use the fbody tailshaft housing. Truck cases are stronger (they are labled "k") but have "ears" on the bellhousing that need to be cut off to slide in easyly. A 94 impala trans would work, they have the stronger k cases without the ears but you would still need to swap shift shafts.

I have a truck case in my 94 right now. Ive had a 96 impala trans in it, the pwm valve was staked in place and the solinoid remained in the vavle body unplugged. I dont if that was proper but it seemed to work just fine.... I flipped a forward sprag on that one 10k after install.

So far ive managed to kill 6 trannys in my car, 2 of which i very poorly "overhauled"...

The current trans i went thru very carfully and spent 4-500 in parts, its holding up very well. When it goes ill just have my boss build one for me, he actually knows what hes doing haha.
