Ok i just purchased this car and im trying to get it on the road. I posted a video of me shifting 1-4th gear. Not going much faster and you can hear how it gets significantly louder. I just want to know if u guys know what the problem could be before i start disassembling the rear.

ok since i dont have a lot of cash right now, i unbolted the caps on the diff and unbolted the driveshaft. I also took out the axles. When i spin the pinion it isnt as smooth as it was before. I believe it could be the pinion bearing and if i replace all of the bearings and crush sleeve could i just bolt it back up resetting the backlash?

Sooo would i need new shims at all and the ring and pinion should be fine correct? I saw no chips or anything on either.

Im gonna order my parts soon so i need to know what would be best to do and where is the cheapest.

Sounds like a pinion bearing. You mght can get lucky it it still be within spec. The only way to know is to do it. Hope you looking for a left rear tire also !!

If you reinstall all the shims exactly as they are now you should be ok. Check for wear on the pinion gear when you have it apart. Teeth shouldnt be sharp on the edges.

ok I am trying to take my pinion nut off and it is a PITA. I took the axles out and took the caps off the diff. Do I have to put the axles on and brakes to take if off or is there another way of doing this??

An impact gun with take it off. If not there is a special holding tool that bots to the yoke and allows you to hold it and take the nut off.

would i be able to get something like that at autozone cause all i have are hand tools

I dont know if AZ would have one you could rent. If they don't try a rental center that rents tools and equipment. If you dont have compressed air you can rent an electric one .
Hold the yoke with a big pipe wrench or channelocks and it should hammer right off.

i have a channellock, but i guess i need some big a** ones. Maybe a pipe wrench will work though

ok well i put some bolts in the yoke and used a pry bar and this nut will not budge at all. I used a breaker bar and sprayed with PB. Any other options i can do? Should I buy a electric impact wrench? Called up the chevy dealer and they said it would cost me no more than $700 if i supplied all the bearings for the rear.:face_shocked:

ok well i torched the pinion nut and got everything apart. Weird thing is that all of the bearing and gear look perfectly fine. WHAT THE HECK!! Any suggestions on what to do. I was thinking of just pu tting it back together and praying that it works. here are some pics.

I assume that it makes that noise driving under load? Did it change under power vs slowing down? I assume the wheel bearings looked good? Did the pinion bearings have some preload on them or was there play in the bearings. Was there excessive backlash between the ring and pinion? There wasn't a stuck rear caliper was there? Just trying to narrow down the possibilities.

well when i accelerate it get louder, when i shift into each gear the louder the noise is. I included a video at the first post. I already checked the wheel bearings and for a stuck caliper. The backlash seemed fine and of course i didnt measure it though. and there wasnt play at all in any of the bearings. The prev owner said it started happening after he had the pinion seal replaced which make me thing 1. they torqued the nut wrong or maybe didnt put the right additive or none at all in the diff.

question. I purchased the rear rebuild kit from TRacing and with the pinion and carrier bearing do I need to pack them with grease or install them with none>?

ok I just recieved my complete rear end install kit from ratech. I am in a hurry to get this put together and I was wondering what would be best. Should I just replace all of the bearings and leave it at that or replace the cone that goes on the pinion bearing also. If I do that will it throw of my backlash even if im using the same shims??

CamaroZGuy

if you replace the bearings you deff. want to replace the races also.

ok well crap where can I get a tapered cone then cause I cant find one at summit or autozone unless I can use something else.

You bought a rebuild kit and it didn't come with races??

no it did, i just dont know where to get the tool to install then, its a cone like tool.

they should go in fairly easy....if not you can do it with a rubber hammer, but be easy with it and be sure to go in square.

96BrknZ
04-16-2010, 02:04 PM
well if a hammer there is no way that I will be able to hit the racer flush since its in the back of the diff.

ok so I just finished prob the worst rearend rebuild EVER!! I had no impact so I couldnt get the preload good enough, but it wasnt that loose at all. Didnt get gear paint except what I think was thread locker it came with my ratech complete kit. Didnt get the backlash either so I used my judgment on it lol. This isnt gonna be like this forever I just had to put it together before I move in 12 days and also before I deploy, so Hopefully after I put some oil in it was better than it was before.
