Whole Car Plastidip
I can't believe I'm asking this, but has anyone on here dipped a whole car? As someone who was never a fan of plastidip, I think the time has come to experiment on my own. With all the funds I have invested in my T/A so far and other projects (home and fixing other stuff to sell), I just don't foresee my car getting the decent paint it deserves for at least a couple years. The car's paint isn't terrible, it just shows wear of a 20 year old car. There are two small dings on the driver side, scrapes on the plastics on the front bumper and ground effects, and the pass. side quarter panel has peeling clearcoat. I also did the CETA mod and my brand new SLP ram air hood in semi flat. Both came out pretty damn good for no clear and just wet sanding in my shop between coats.
The car is red and I'm considering flat red or something. There are a lot of neat colors out there but I heard red is the worst for coverage. I don't want a ricer and shit look because at a distance, my car is not terrible. I have a couple decent paint guns and access to a large compressor, but am considering buying the DYC kit with their gun. Why not paint it myself you might ask? Because I'm not competent enough lol. Not looking to rattle can the dip though.
Anyway, I'm on the hunt for dipped cars, specifically in flat red or red variant. I don't know if I'd consider any other color, truthfully. If someone has a picture or did their car - please share and post your experience and procedure. It may help persuade me to the dark side.

Can I make a suggestion.. DIY body prep... the give it to Maaco. Their paint and painters are actually pretty good... but to offer cheap.paint jobs...the do no real prep..and use one stage rather than base coat/clear coat. Request base/clear and do ur own prep... and I bet they would be alot cheaper than other shops.
It what I intend to do to my TA.

I joined over \/\/\/ (same SN I think) and did a lot of research. There are a LOT of knowledgeable dippers over there.
http://www.dipyourcar.com/forums/forum.php?
As long as you are okay with the "flat" look it will have, and the color selection if you are not going to mix your own. There is a red that I looked at, but it was not bright at all.
A few tips:
1. Once you think you have sprayed it thick enough, you are about 1/3 of the way there.
2. Rattle cans are not for entire cars lol, and probably cost more than buying the whole kit with the sprayer and doing it right anyway.
3. Find what you want that someone has already done. Then you can get better advice on base coat color depending on what color you want on top. There are a few Birds on that forum that have been dipped.
Mild to Wild, a solid color, custom camo scheme, stripes, etc. They have done it all over there. Good luck with the project and remember, "When I dip, you dip, we dip!"'72 Nova "HadeSS"

Prep is the hardest part of doing a paint job, and if I went through all of that work I'd just paint it myself. Maaco is definitely an option though. I like the idea of PD being able to peel off after a couple years and also preserve what paint is underneath.
That Jetta is definitely not my cup of tea lol, but the color turned out nice. I can't stop pitying those tires, though. lol
I also joined the DYC forum. Some good reading material over there. If I were to dip the car, it'd probably look into getting a basecoat (gunmetal gray) and then about 4 gallons of red. That seems to be the general consensus for our cars. Although the GG base isn't exactly a requirement. I like how the prep work isn't major. And it's not like their paint gun is anything special. The Youtube vids I saw of some people using Wagners and stuff right out of Lowe's/Home Depot.
I'm still on the fence but leaning towards the dark side lol. The idea of buying a couple hundred dollars in product that is just temporary is the most alarming. Not trying to be a cheap ass, but I stayed pretty close to budget for my car and not looking for perfection, just want to make it a little nicer to look at.
Some dipped cars that stuck out to me: (Yes, some are pearl or heavily mixed)
