Thread: PA Folks

    Default PA Folks

Fairly certain I can register/tag my car (1995) as a classic, and that gets me out of emissions inspection.

Is that a fair assessment? Are there downsides to classis tags? For safety inspections (da faq PA) is that a simple inspection or will I get nitpicked over everything? Are the inspections something I can stand there with the shop and watch? (Not overly fond of leaving my car at random shop)

    Thanks

Classic tags still require annual safety inspection but are exempt from emissions. Antique tags require no safety inspection or emissions but you are limited to driving between dusk and dawn. All lighting requirements still apply.

Move to NJ..... no inspections of any kind 1995 and older. About the only positive NJ thing I can think of.

Currently is NJ tagged, and I am finally getting released from the prison of NJ.

Ironically, NJ is less intrusive on car stuff than PA. Wacky world.

Regarding inspections - there is a lot of variation depending on location. Also, emissions is done on a per capita/county by county basis. For instance, I live in Schuylkill County and we never had emissions due to our population. Probably never will, but who knows. If I went to any legit shop in my area, they should still be doing a visual inspection and checking to ensure all smog/cats/etc crap has not been tampered with. Any real car guy knows who to go to and who to avoid. I take my wife's car to the dealer or the garage 1/4 mile away for inspections. I take my piles of crap to a garage that built their own 6 sec 1st gen. I stand around and make small talk while they inspect brake pads, tires, lights, etc.

I've gone to "lick em and stick em" places where they literally just hand you the inspection sticker and a scraper, but I'd avoid them. They're usually on someone's radar and don't last long.

Where in PA are you going?

depends on the county, northampton/lehigh/montgomery county is full on inspection including emissions, other countys are like harner said. but if you stay below a certain mileage it is exempt anyway.

We have to have annual inspection here in La. in a group of local Parishes that have bad ozone. Some Parishes allow a two year inspection sticker.
The State laws on smog inspection is pretty extensive including hooking the vehicle up through the data link and doing a full test to make sure all pollution controls work.
No "lickem and stickem" because every smog test has to be on their computer on pollution controlled vehicles.
I'll be glad when 2022 arrives because I'm gonna get an Antique plate and eliminate the annual inspection forever. It's just another pain in the ass to have to take care of.
Especially because I have seven vehicles. Two are exempt, the '57 and now the '94. woop woop.
My wife got one for her '94 when it reached 25 yrs. old.

Technically you can have it inspected in any county, they just have to "inspect" it based on your resident counties requirements. I used to bring mine an hour away to a shop @popo8 recommended which was 2 counties over
