    Default Dataogging lean condition

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, I have a 1989 IROC-Z LT1/T56 swapped. The engine is a 355 with a CC306, long tubes, no cats, no emissions, stock TB, stock heads, PCMforless tune. Car used to run great but recent issues have the o2's showing lean and dumping fuel to overcompensate (smells rich and spark plugs are black). I used to get Lean codes at both banks but no more SES lights, so I have made progress. I have no exhaust leaks, replaced a lot of rubber hoses and grommets that looked suspect of vacuum leaks. Fuel pressure regulator was replaced, injectors were cleaned and pulsed, fuel filter was replaced. I have steady fuel pressure, I have spark at each cylinder - I am absolutely stumped.

My IAC was pretty dirty so I cleaned that as well as the TB which got my IAC counts back in check once the car warms up. Below data is Open Loop, the o2's are showing lean (as well as my air/fuel gauge) with fuel trims at 128/128. When I rev it up, the o2's seem to come alive.

The next data set is in closed loop. o2's are bouncing around and the fuel trims are 145/152 at idle, once I give it some gas and hold it, the fuel trims even out to on or about 128/128. As soon as I let off, it goes right back - almost as if it is vacuum leak but I have no idea where else it could be coming from.

Can your data logging software produce a .csv file of the results? That way you can see all the frames, not just a few, making it a lot easier to interpret the data, see trends, and find relationships between problems and causes.

There's something screwed up with the injector pulse width data - the units are 0, and are shown as milliVolts (mV), when they should be milliSeconds.

Was the PCM reset before you started? That would explain the 128/128 LTFT's in open loop. Reset puts the LTFT's at 128, and learning is disabled in open loop. Did you delete AIR as part of “no emissions”? An active AIR pump causes lean O2 sensor readings in open loop. Without the AIR system, the lean O2 readings may be an issue with the CLT temp and the resulting degree of cold start enrichment.

In closed loop, the Cell 16 (idle) LTFT's have developed (learned), but when you open the throttle and it shifts to Cell 18, most likely it’s because Cell 18 can't “learn” because after the reset, and not having driven (no learning), Cells 01 thru 15 are still at 128/128, and Cell 18 is mathematically derived from those cells.

A complete, running log in spreadsheet format is going to tell us a lot more about how the engine is running. Just listing a few spaced out frames of data isn’t very useful. What software are you using?

There's something screwed up with the injector pulse width data - the units are 0, and are shown as milliVolts (mV), when they should be milliSeconds.

Was the PCM reset before you started? That would explain the 128/128 LTFT's in open loop. Reset puts the LTFT's at 128, and learning is disabled in open loop. Did you delete AIR as part of “no emissions”? An active AIR pump causes lean O2 sensor readings in open loop. Without the AIR system, the lean O2 readings may be an issue with the CLT temp and the resulting degree of cold start enrichment.

I was hoping to get an actual log and not just frames but I don't think I can, I'm using an Actron CP9690 Elite Auto Scanner.

The PCM was reset before I started, I wanted to see how the o2's were reacting to the base fuel trims plus I had just cleaned out the TB/IAC. The injector pulse stood out to me, sometimes it will show 4-7 but mostly 0 even though I know they are each pulsing. AIR has been physically deleted but does the fact that it's switching "ON" in the PCM still have an effect?

Regarding temp, I have noticed -40 on my scanner but it quickly switched back to normal reading and hasn't happened since. I looked over the wiring, voltage, and ohms and it all checked out. Think that could be an underlying issue or not really since it's operating and the car is going into CLSD Loop?

Interesting regarding the Cells, I didn't know that. It sounds like I need to drive the car to let it relearn and go from there. Luckily we had all this rain in NJ to wash the salt off the roads

The engine can't run if the injectors don't pulse. The PW data is supposed to show the base injector pulse width. At idle you can see anywhere from 2.0 to 4.0 mSec. There is a diagnostic for the injector circuits, to insure they have 12 volts on the pink wire and are receiving a ground from the PCM to pulse them. An injector circuit fault sets DTC 18. Even that does not verify there is actual flow through an injector.

You might want to use Scan9495, free data logging software specifically for the 93-95 LT1. It was written by a member here (although he doesn't seem to post here any more). Requires the free download of the software, and a cable you can buy or build. This thread explains what is necessary, and how to set it up. If there is any problem with the setup, I can get the author to respond and walk you through it.

I've reviewed 100's of Scan9495 data logs for people, and it is the best available. Can do 2-way communications, turning actuators on and off, scans the air bag and ABS systems, etc.

Sounds like the way to go. When I did the engine swap I wired the factory 89 ALDL 12-pin connector and I'm reading diagnostics as if it's a 94. I still have my moates cable from the TPI so I'm covered there. Unfortunately I have a macbook but I'm in the process of getting a buddy's PC to use.

Read the description of the cable Gary recommends. You may have to scroll through the thread to find the latest versions of the ready-made cable and the DIY components. The DIY cable is made up of fairly inexpensive Chinese stuff, which is sometimes not reliable with regard to ability to connect and transmit data.

I got an older laptop with Win7 on it, downloaded the software and usb drivers. Verified the port I'm using but when I click connect, it won't sync to the car. I tried other ports as well without luck. I'm using this cable http://www.moates.net/aldu1-and-cabl....html?cPath=64 . I tried with 10k and "open" which made no difference. I d/led the 2.8.24.0 (4/10/2012) driver because the cable was purchased prior to that date. Any ideas what I'm missing?

Let me get the author of the software to help. I don’t use the Scan9495 software (I ditched the stock PCM 20 years ago), but I've been helping people with their data logs dating back to Diacom, pcmcomm, DataMaster, AutoTap, etc.

OK, let's see what we can do. Download this exe file: http://www.mediafire.com/file/1e9jbd..._test.exe/file
You can trust it if your pc warns you about it....and it probably will do that.
Run it while the cable is attached to the pc only, not the car. Check the repeat button so it keeps running. The display box on the screen should show numbers counting up, like 01, 02, 03, 04 etc. Let us know what you see (numbers or nothing). This will tell us if the cable is working and part of the cable wiring is correct.

1998 Trans Am - LS1/A4 - all stock and almost all original - one owner - driven daily.

Thanks for chiming in to help me out. I ran the test and it shows numbers counting up very fast and continues.
