Head gasket and radiator cap are usual culprits in my experience.

Rent a cooling system tester at the local auto parts store. This will help you find the issue.

May also be a leak in the rubber line (or the metal tube on top of the reservoir) from the radiator over flow to the reservoir.

Gets hot, coolant expands, pressure cap releases coolant through line, into reservoir. Radiator cools down, coolant contracts, pulls a vacuum, which opens the vacuum relief in the cap, and the vacuum is supposed to pull coolant from the radiator to keep the radiator full, but it can't because of the leaks in the line, just pulls in air. Radiator now has air in it.

See a lot of this with vehicles this old.

Yes, the line from the radiator neck to the coolant reservoir, under the battery. The part of the line under the battery is metal, and it can perforate due to corrosion. Could be the flexible line, or the metal tube. Or possibly that's not the problem at all. Just a suggestion.

    Beaver,
Were you able to find a cooling system tester?
