So what are the limits of the ARP mains on a 2 bolt setup as far as rwhp and RPM? Trying to decide if a 4 bolt splayed will be a must or not.

if you're using arp bolts on the mains, you need a line hone anyway, splayed caps are cheap insurance. I'd spend the money if boost or nitrous are in plans for above 500 whp. if not, gamble.

fyi the stock rods are the weak part of an lt1

too cheap, I wouldn't get it. a 396 you should have 4 bolt for. heavy crank and rotating assembly.

you should talk to Karl Ellwein if you want a 396 lt1 that will survive

After looking into this a bit further I am going to be doing a 383 as it just makes more sense especially with longevity being a consideration.

A good balance job and detonation is your enemy, keep those two in sink and you are good to go... how do I know this,
722 RWHP, stock crank, 2 bolt.

true, but it's not a stroker 396. I do trust your judgement though moe

Does not have to be a stroker, as you know, RPM is the killer and if you have a bad balance job, the rotating assembly is not in perfect harmony it will cause basically vibrations in the upper RPM band, along with detonation, this will make your main caps "walk" resulting in catastrophic failure, back in the day with the ole 302 Z28"s, people were spinning those to 8000 RPM! from the factory, yes eventually a rod would peek out for some sunshine, but GM's engineering was pretty spot on as far assembling a performance motor with their balancing of the bottom end.

Well a good stroker 383 being limited to 6200 RPM's should provide me with a long lasting engine based on that if it is built right. Still looking into my main options, but a good played cap main or possibly just an ARP main might be sufficient. Still weighing all the options as I don't want to have to redo it later.
