Supporting MemberAfter two years of working with this client he finally let me get my hands on his beautiful '61 Corvette. The end goal of this job was to preserve the 40 year old paint (Yes its a repaint) as much as possible while safely correcting what I could. Started with a light engine bay detail followed by a basic wash and decon (claybar), then slathered the paint in Meguiars #7 for 5 hours. While the paint was soaking up the oils I polished the chrome, and knocked out the interior. The next day I compounded (IGL F1 on IGL FMO) the paint followed by a diminishing polish (IGL F2 on IGL FMY) and then a coat of expensive wax (Angelwax 1).

Supporting MemberYea he loved it. After I finished the compound he said he hadn't seen it look that good in 25 years. Once I was done he said it had never looked that good. He is super excited to take it to shows and gave me a $100 tip.

Supporting MemberSingle stage paint can dry out a bit if it sits for too long without maintenance. Basically the oils evaporate out. Meguiars #7 glaze has feeder oils in it. By using a glaze soak its almost like a form of rehydration for the paint and it makes it considerably easier to do other work such as compounding and polishing because it wont suck up as much if the chemicals. It also helps to bring a lot of the gloss back. This paint wasn't too bad plus I was considering the high ambient temperature and figured somewhere between 5 and 7 hours would be enough for this paint. Really rough paint should be covered thicker than what I did and should soak for 12-24 hours.

That's what I was wondering about. With a clear coat how does it get to the paint.
