    Default Never forget

It's amazing to me that 15 years have passed by. We say Never Forget, but in all honesty, how many people think about the loss from that day 15 years ago.

So the least we can do is take a moment on the anniversary dates to remember all those lost, and for that one day... REMEMBER.

I hear that... woke up to my tv alarm and the news was covering that the first tower had just been hit. I had just become a Police Officer less than 2 weeks prior, and I remember thinking... what would i do if I was there...

I'll never forget. I was stationed at McGuire AFB NJ in the 2nd ARS as a KC-10 Boom Operator at the time. Was doing a June through October stint on the base Honor Guard, and happened to be walking into my squadron that morning to check in since I wasn't on any Honor Guard Details. Everyone was crowded in Scheduling. I came strolling in and first person I remember seeing is my commander who pointed at me and said "Go home, you're in crew rest, bravo alert." Chased a buddy home (we lived at the same apt complex) at 100+ MPH speeds and spent the rest of the day in front of the TV in a daze.

Next morning at 0430 got an alert call, first Aircrew from McGuire alerted. We were second airborne (they alerted an alpha alert 1 hour response crew about 1+30 prior to our takeoff) and flew a 12 hour Combat Air Patrol over Chicago on 9/12 refueling patrolling F-15's and F-16's all day. No air traffic other than us. When out shift ended, it was the most surreal thing. We were cleared direct from overhead Chicago to McGuire, which is anyone knows anything about flying especially on the east coast, that is an impossibility in normal ops days. Exactly one week after the attack flew another combat air patrol over NYC this time, directly overhead the remnants of the towers. They were still smoldering. One of the most somber flights I've ever been on. Spent the next couple of years constantly doing 60 day deployments to the middle east in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Had it easy compared to the vast majority of guys over there though, so don't thank me for doing it please.

I made a couple of calls at the time and I was 100% correct. One, we ended up in a modern day vietnam with much higher stakes. Just look now, case in point. Two, the closet patriotism of this country is pathetic. So quickly the flags came up in support, so quickly they also came down.

Outside of the Tristate, not many raw memories of it so it tends to not have that much of an impact on people.

Personally what irks me the most these days, is the news stations constantly playing clips of the towers falling. Fuck your ratings and have some decency.
