If you are looking to race and are worried about being competitive, the true street and bracket classes are your best bet, but most people will agree that the parking lot party is about the best time you will have. It is a one of a kind event. Hope to see you there!

it is definitely worth the trip.
Most show up Fri night, check in the hotel (LTX discount), everyome hangs out in the parking lot and becomes one big family.
People mingle, hang out and talk cars/LT1's all night.
Saturday is race day and after the event back to hotel for shower, awards ceremony then the BIG parking lot party.
Sunday, breakfast and drive home (Texas).
Lots of fun packed into the weekend and anyone interested in LT1's at all should try and make it at least once.
After making it once and becoming part of the family you will make it a yearly thing.

There was a guy at the shootout a few years ago that brought a short block and everyone had it running for the shootout. They built it in the parking lot.

I have many pics of that... this community is a family, and it shows when members are in need. This family has gathered money and saved a members vehicle from repo... this community pulled together to get a car that was in non running shortblock status to a running vehicle in the hotel parking lot.... the list goes on.

As much as I hate to say this, it is a dying event. The attendance has fallen (NOT increased), and every year it seems many say they are going, or want to go, then don't show, or come up with something last moment preventing them. Each year there are just less people who continue to maintain the LTX platform, and less enthusiasts who wish to attend the LTXShootout. Last I checked, (like a week ago), there were a whopping 2 people registered for the 2016 LTXShootout. I realize this number will increase as the event gets closer. But if you are like me, I am choosing not to go, simply because there are many more events that will have a decent amount of attendance.
I wish to convey no offense to the event, or people who do actually go there, just wish to pass on my opinion purely as the OP was looking for this specific input.
