    Default First SCCA event in...

Well I have been lurking around the sub forums and did not realize this was here....

I will be setting up my car for full board road racing, however, the AutoX is also on my list of to do's.

Tomorrow I will be attending my SCCA event in... to many years.

Not as a driver, but a walker and looker... If it interests anyone, I could document (photo's) my trip to help show what kind of scene is here in Vegas. I have been told a few hundred cars ranging from stock to full out race.

Well, it was interesting, going to my first AutoX event in years (last one I actually attended was in the 80's). Although I did not race, it was more of a walk & talk. Find out who ran the local chapter, find out the rules, fees and get a feel for the community of people who make up the group. (yes, look at cars and scope out the "would-be" competition...) This was also the action behind the talk, for me, I have been saying I wanted to join the SCCA for years. Now, that is finally becoming a reality.

The event was well organized, well planned and ran remarkably smoothly. The track layout was technical, not to many straightaways to gain any time lost in improper handling of a corner or s-curve. BUT, if one was savvy/skilled enough, could bend the rules just enough with a drift here or there... (some did and turned in the fastest times)

I will be honest, I was somewhat disappointed in what cars were present. May have been do to preconceptions or miss directed information of what I might see there.

The 2 most dominant cars were, the Mazda Miata and the Corvette. There was allot of "stock" cars running the course, every manufacture was represented from the Ford escort to the VW GTI. There was even an old Datsun Pick up, ran surprisingly well. Some mustangs, in various packages, GT, Shelby GT, Shelby GT500. The one shinning star among the stangs was an 86 GT that was outfitted for full road racing. Do not worry, none of the stangs did well. Honda S2000's take the prize for the most money invested, at least it appeared that way. They were the most radical in looks/mods and performance. There were a grand total of 2 4th Gen Camaros, both were LT1 cars, one was SS the other a Z28. I was unable to catch the owners of the cars for a talk. BUT at least we were represented. They both ran under the street modified class, nothing major or at least visually identifiable. No cages, not wide-bodied,,, maybe a little louder. They ran ok, but not well enough to walk away with any ego. The wild ones were clearly the Subaru's, highly modified and motivated, was a joy to watch them run. After watching so many cars navigate the track at what seemed a leisurely pace, these boys were wide open and moving. They are the clear "group" to beat, at least at this meet. A whole 7-9 seconds faster then the F-Bodys. There was a 5 gen Camaro present, but I think the kid just bought it, My out of shape ass could have ran the course faster! ... well that's what it felt like...Not many exotics, a few porches, but nothing to really go wow about both in model or in how they ran the track.

The prize car, was a Factory Five Cobra, well built, but unfortunately powered by ford... he he. I think he loved it too much, my wife referenced his driving to a slightly agitated sunday driver....

In total a 125 cars registered to race the clock today. I was too busy watching/talking to take to many pictures... go figure huh... here are few, but they do not show the true amount of cars or the sheer size of the event. I did get a pic of one of the 4th gens.

From what I have gathered, I will be running in the Unlimited Class. When my car is completed and ready for race, it will at least more then look the part. Now, will it keep up the rest of them.....

Yeah it was nice! it had been in his family since the day it was purchased new, over 400,000 miles on the chassis. Fun to watch him run, the weight of the car just worked against him... needs to really beef up the suspension. Great guy though.
