    Default Sahara54's Formula build thread

Ok, I posted a intro awhile ago about me and my car but I figured I's start a build thread on here. I did post my thread on a local F-body site as well so it is alil post dated.

    June 2012

Back in 06' I bought a 2000 Z28 LS1/T56 in torch red. When I first bought it was pitiful to say the least; Factory rims, hidious front tag mount, and rediculous exhaust tips. After 2 years, I had added ZR1's, berger panel, less rediculous exhaust tips (still hated them) and a look alike GMMG ZL1 front grill insert w/ orig. 69' COPO badge and a handful of bolt-ons and suspension parts.

While heading home on December 12, 2008, I hydro-planed on the highway (bad VSS on rear axle shut off TC) and backed it into the guard rail; she was racked pretty good and I bought it back with plans of a LS1 3rd gen. Fast forward 3 years sitting in a storage unit, I sold her away to help finance my recent purchace of a house. I immediatly felt a loss and there was a void that could only be filled by another Fbody.

On Febuary 29th, I closed on my first home which included a stand alone 2 car garage. There was empty space that needed to be filled. A friend had bought a 94 Formula auto in the fall of last year with what appeared to be a blown head gasket. After badgering that he would never touch it due to his 2 3rd gens and various other projects, he sold the car to me for a meger 400 bucks and a DSM turbo ecu (from a log ago project). With the car home, we dug in; revieling the problem.

In addition to the head gasket, we found the disassembled lifter and cracked/bent pushrod. We found all of the lifter except the rollpin and a peice of the snap ring. With a 160,000 on the clock , I decieded if Im going to do it. Im doing it right and giving her a fresh start and alil more oomph to get her moving. So here the plan:

    July 2012

I pulled apart the bottom end for machining. I also had to cut and weld in some fresh metal under where the battery/overflow tank. One of the last owners didn't look at the battery much and the corrosion took its toll. The entire top of the sub-frame and the reservoir hole had to be fabbed.

    September 2012 - Current

I bought a fresh bottom end and heads from a close friend from his 94 Z28 build. He ended up trading his 94 roller for a low mileage 1986 IROC and a T56. Him and I were doing the same exact build so it kinda worked out perfect. I also decided to go with an EWP and convert to the vented Opti so I can use a conventional roller timing chain (Cloyes 9-3157) Hopefully, I should have the bottom end completely buttoned up and ready to go this weekend.

I'll try to snap some more pics here as I tear into it more. I always seem to take the camera out to the garage but forget to take pics as I get wrapped up in the project.

Quick update: I should have my rod bearings in hand tomorrow after noon. Hopefully, that means pistons will be sliding into their new homes tomorrow night. I picked up my intake from my friends machine shop after it was bead blasted and surfaces cleaned. All I can say is WOW, i was going to paint it black with the natural machined ridges but the natural aluminum is amazing. Ill get a pic up soon but heres how I got it home.
