Smaller alternator in factory location??
Has anyone done this yet?
I am trying to fit a smaller alternator in the factory location. I have found through internet research, that the CS-130 alternator is about 5 lbs lighter and a smaller diameter case than the factory CS-144. The alt for a 90-93 S-10 4.3 uses the same plug, but does not have the mounting ears 180 degrees apart.
I know your gonna ask why, but I am trying to get my tall valve covers to fit the passenger side without resorting to cutting up the new valve cover. I can not grind enough of the alternator to get the VC to clear. They are 3-1/2" tall.
Thanks

Looks like the L99 (aka baby 4.3 LT1 from '94 Caprice) alternator is smaller. Why more people don't do this though makes me kind of cautious. I would think it would work on a F-body bracket. Not sure if it would totally clear any passenger valve cover but should have more clearance.

I hope that is enough that you can get the right part. I went to the local shop and told them what I wanted to do. We looked around on the shelfs and found this. He said take it home, see if it will work and bring it back and he would rebuild it. I had the VC modified and the alt fit with plenty of clearance. I took it back and it was rebuilt, he gave me a lifetime warranty all for $95.Last edited by uncool; 04-30-2011 at 10:47 PM.
