    Yes the centering springs are very stiff. It's been a few years since I had the ripper, but the MGW does seem to have extremely short throws and I have mine set as long as the handle will allow.

    The top does have a lip around it to keep things from falling off easy, but It does need a little better system. If it didn't have the black pad, it would be deep enough, but the pad keeps stuff put.
