What are the compromises between selecting a 5.85" rod and pistons vs 5.7" in a boosted 383 on pump gas? Is there theoretically a more suprior set up? Is this mainly just a compromise between weight and ringland spacing and crown height?

The 5.7 rod will give you a piston that has more meat up top but comes with more side load force. I originally had 5.7 rods in my engine but later switched to 5.85s during a rebuild to reduce the skirt wear. To be clear, the 5.7s worked just fine so it was a minor tweak to the rebuild which also included custom pistons.
