YES you must. Other wise you risk tearing them. Also makes for an easy install. use a few drops of motor oil. Thats what is recommended by GM.
I use motor oil, goes in easy

you should never put a petroleum based product on any oring they WILL swell. you should use a proper o ring lubricant like parker oring lubricant or you can get away with vegetable oil.

They are sealing gasoline which it petroleum based, o'rings come in a multitude of elastomers to seal almost anything. Oil will swell some o'rings but not ones specified for petro.

they are not sealing gasoline in your intake manifold. they are stopping unmetered air from entering the intake manifold which is on a vacuum. exposing a very miniscule fraction of the surface of an oring to an air fuel charge is nothing compared to coating an oring in oil. i understand that they make viton, buna, ect orings. ive worked in professional racing for almost a decade and i can promise you one thing, rubber, viton, buna, whatever the material is.....if you know better and you get caught using oil on an oring, youll get shown the door.

Never had a problem with using motor oil on any o rings but dielectric grease is good also.

For installing o'rings in equipment where oil, grease or silicone based lubes would contaminate the product, like GM or Ford's paint house for example.

no to keep orings from swelling...im now in the offshore natural gas production field engine and compressor services. i build and overhaul engines that wouldnt fit into your living room. the cylinder sleeves are oring sealed. lube one of those with oil, install it into a block, and when you come back in the morning you can wonder why all the sleeves are protruding 1/8 to a 1/4 inch above the deck.

This shit is hilarious. You're talking about putting a few drops of oil on an o-ring to keep it from tearing/folding when installing it. Who cares if it swells?

i work as a GM dealership tech and have been doing so for 17 years and GM engineers specify using engine oil for installing fuel injector orings but what do they know lol

I did not say anyone was an idiot. If you want to use your special lube go right ahead. I will keep using motor oil and keep not having problems with my injector o-rings. Sound fair to you?

just figured if you were answering such a novice question about oring lubrication, you would want to give out information that was safe on ALL applications...not just VITON injector orings....8yrs Top Fuel Engine Builder.....6yrs Offshore Engine and Compressor Field Service.....

Took a look through my GM service manal for the F platform in the 1995 year. Says oil.

I do agree with 93phoenix. I have been in situations where special lubricants are required for different seal materials. And I have seen seals swell 5+x their normal size when using the wrong lubricant. Like a marshmallow in a microwave.
